This position performs manual labor, pipe handling, trench preparation, bedding installation, backfilling, cleanup, and general support activities to help ensure that work is completed safely, accurately, and according to project plans and specifications. The employee must be willing to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and follow all company, project, and OSHA safety requirements. Trenching and excavation work must be performed only in accordance with the project's protective-system requirements and under the direction of the competent person. OSHA identifies cave-ins as the greatest trenching hazard and requires appropriate measures such as sloping, benching, shoring, or shielding where applicable. Essential Duties Assist with the installation of underground water main, sanitary sewer, storm drain, drainage, and other utility piping systems. Prepare trenches by removing loose material, hand digging around existing utilities, and maintaining a clean and stable work area. Install and maintain pipe bedding, haunching, and backfill materials according to plans and project specifications. Help unload, move, stage, and safely position pipe, fittings, manholes, structures, and related materials. Assist the Pipe Layer with aligning, joining, sealing, and securing pipes and fittings. Use hand tools, power tools, tampers, compactors, saws, shovels, and other equipment as trained and authorized. Assist with setting pipe to the required line and grade using grade rods, levels, pipe lasers, or other layout equipment under the direction of qualified personnel. Help install manholes, catch basins, inlets, cleanouts, valve boxes, fittings, restraints, and utility structures. Check pipe, fittings, joints, and structures for visible defects or improper installation and immediately report concerns to the Foreman. Assist with pressure testing, mandrel testing, air testing, flushing, leakage testing, and other inspection activities when required. Perform hand excavation and utility exposure in areas where existing underground utilities are present. Maintain communication with equipment operators using approved hand signals or radios. Assist with backfilling, compacting, grading, and restoring work areas. Maintain tools, equipment, materials, and the jobsite in a clean and orderly condition. Follow instructions from the Foreman, Pipe Layer, Superintendent, surveyor, and other authorized project personnel. Perform traffic-control support, including placement of cones, barricades, signage, and other safety devices when assigned. Complete daily work activities in a productive, professional, and safe manner. Perform other duties related to underground utility construction as assigned. Underground utility, pipe-laying, or site-development experience is a plus. Ability to read or understand basic construction drawings, utility markings, stakes, and grade information preferred. Ability to recognize and report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, exposed utilities, or changes in trench conditions. Valid driver's license preferred. Physical and Work Requirements Ability to work outdoors in heat, rain, humidity, dust, noise, and other changing conditions. Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, reach, balance, and work in uneven terrain. Ability to frequently lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds, with heavier materials moved using mechanical equipment or proper lifting procedures. Ability to work around excavators, loaders, trenching equipment, trucks, pumps, compactors, and other construction machinery. Ability to work extended hours, early mornings, nights, weekends, or emergency schedules when required by the project. Ability to work near active roadways and maintain awareness of vehicle and equipment traffic.
