Job Description

Summary:
Performs semi-skilled tasks related to water distribution systems operation to include construction, maintenance and repair activities. This position is intended to perform work tasks as assigned and under the direction of a foreman. Work is subject to inspection by supervisor.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Assists the transport of materials to the job site and assists foreman in the accomplishment of work.

Operates pumps, saws, hand tools and other related mechanical and hand equipment for excavation, pipe fitting and surface restoration activities. Performs installation and repair of new and existing piping, fittings, valves, meters and other miscellaneous water distribution system components in accordance with accepted standards and regulatory requirements. Assists performance of pressure testing, disinfection, meter testing, backflow prevention testing and maintenance as necessary. Performs cleaning, painting, tool upkeep and limited preventative maintenance activities for vehicles and other related equipment. Illustrates competency and willingness to attain pertinent certifications for promoting system regulatory compliance and worksite safety procedure efficiencies. Participates in on-call and after-hours duties as assigned. Must be available for overtime and emergency call-outs when necessary. Assists in preparation for, response to, and recovery from, the impacts of a wide variety of disasters or emergency situations and may be temporarily assigned to other duties, locations, and shifts. Meets attendance requirements. Promotes positive customer service environment internally and externally. Performs other job-related functions as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities:

Experience:
High school diploma, G.E.D. or other certificate of competency. Possession of a valid Water Distribution Operator license issued by the State of Florida is to be required after one (1) year of experience in this position.. Or an equivalent combination of training, education and/or experience. Desired experience includes working knowledge with water distribution and/ or wastewater collection system construction, repair or maintenance. Additional or supplemental experience with various hand tools and machinery is recommended. Working knowledge of piping or mechanical systems operation and repair is also recommended but not required.
Qualification Requirements:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Must have valid Florida Driver's License and be able to obtain, within six months of employment, a valid Florida Commercial Driver's License Class B. Individuals applying for this position or incumbents of this position are required to hold (or obtain within 6 months of employment) a valid commercial driver's license (class B or above) as a condition of employment. All applicants applying for a position that requires a CDL and employees currently holding a CDL as required by their position description are subject to pre-employment and continuing post-employment drug and alcohol testing. Failure to comply with such testing is grounds for termination of employment. Awareness of hazards and safety precautions while performing excavation and pipe repair of the work assigned. Some working knowledge of tools methods, materials and equipment used in performance of excavation, piping and roadway related work. Some knowledge of fittings and parts related to piping systems. Knowledge of the equipment needed to the performance of duties assigned. Possess effective verbal and written communication skills.
Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully meet the essential functions of this job. Sufficient physical strength and agility to do manual labor; often for extended periods of time and under adverse weather conditions. Ability to move up to 75 lbs. over a distance of 100 feet. Ability to operate a motor vehicle under all weather conditions any time of day or night. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to climb, balance, stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distant, and peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Sufficient auditory perception and speaking ability for radio communication.
Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to high. The temperature level in the typical work environment is moderate to high, usually ranging between 60 to 90 degrees F seasonally dependent. During winter months the temperature in the morning and evening hours can occasionally be below freezing or 32 degrees F for short duration periods. High pressure water system components are present in the work environment. Several chemical feed systems make up a portion of the system environment and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are available for review to insure employee is familiar with appropriate safe handling procedures associated with each chemical of interest. Several tasks involve system related work to be performed in excavated work areas near high traffic roadways. Properly administered work excavation and traffic control standards are necessary for safe performance of work.
