Job Description Under the general direction of the Wastewater Superintendent, this position involves work in the operations, maintenance and repair of the wastewater treatment and the collection system. Typical Duties Monitors and may regulate the rate of flow of raw sewage into the plant and between each treatment operation under the direction of the higher level Operator. Reads and records a variety of meters and flow charts keeping a daily log of operations. Operates, cleans, and repairs bar-screen apparatus, grit and grease chamber, rotating bridges, tractors, loaders, composting equipment, and other related machinery. Takes scheduled laboratory samples at various locations under the direction of the Higher level operator. May conduct under the supervision of the Higher level operator, calibration of dissolved oxygen and pH meters, and perform laboratory tests such as suspended solids, chlorine residuals, dissolved oxygen and pH, BOD, COD, etc. Performs preventive maintenance tasks, repacks pumps, oils pumps and motors under direction of higher level Operators and any other task deemed necessary for the proper operation and maintenance on all equipment in the Division. Assists in the major overhaul and repair of plant and collection equipment under the direction of higher level operator. Performs custodial work such as sweeping, mopping and scrubbing to keep buildings and equipment in a clean and orderly manner. Maintains WWTP landscaping, farm crops and farm operations. Attends short schools, training programs and seminars that will enhance ones knowledge assigned by the Higher level operator. Excavates with backhoe, bobcat, shovels, picks and other hand tools around sewer lines in order to expose problem areas. These areas may consist of exposing gas, water, electrical, cable and fiber optic lines prior to finding the city sewer line. Repairs sewer lines by replacing sections of lines or patching under the direction of the Higher level operator. Installs new sewer lines under the direction of the Higher level operator. Builds, raises or lowers manhole structures under direction of Higher level operator. Unstops sewer lines manually and by using high pressure sewer cleaning equipment. May operate dump trucks, front end loaders, and back hoe under direction of Higher level operator. Performs preventive maintenance on sewer collection system by flushing out lines on a scheduled basis. Serves a seven day after hour, weekend and storm call back duty on a rotating basis with other wastewater division staff. Requirements Must have or be able to obtain within twelve months or the next available testing date a Level I Operators Certification of New Mexico. Must have at least one year of hands on experience in the wastewater field. Must have or be able to obtain a valid New Mexico Commercial Drivers License class B with the appropriate endorsements within three months or the first available testing. Position requires safety toe footwear. Due to the environmental sensitivity and requirements of operation of the facility, the above milestones must be met to continue employment.
