Job Title:
Fabricator Job Description This role focuses on MIG welding and the fabrication of various metal products, including gates, posts, brackets, and structural components. You will work primarily in a fabrication shop, using a wide range of welding and machining equipment, and occasionally travel to customer sites for installation and remedial work for periods of up to two weeks. The position requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to read and interpret blueprints while producing high-quality, precise metal fabrications. Responsibilities Perform MIG welding as the primary welding process, with additional use of stick and TIG welding as required. Fabricate a variety of metal products such as gates, posts, brackets, fencing components, and structural frames. Install fencing and gates at customer sites, ensuring accurate alignment, secure anchoring, and high-quality finishes. Work frequently with a plasma cutting machine to cut and shape metal components according to specifications. Carry out general structural and mechanical maintenance on fabricated products and equipment as needed. Operate fabrication machinery including press brake, plasma cutter, lathe, mill, drill press, MIG and stick welders, bandsaw, and various power tools. Read and interpret blueprints, layouts, and developments to fabricate parts and assemblies that meet design requirements. Perform grinding, fitting, and assembly of components to achieve precise dimensions and proper fit-up. Support production activities by assembling and welding sheet metal, carbon steel, aluminum, and stainless steel components. Conduct basic quality checks on welds and fabricated parts, and assist with quality inspections and documentation when required. Travel to job sites as needed, including extended assignments of up to two weeks, to perform installation, repairs, and remedial work. Use hand tools and shop equipment safely and efficiently, following all safety procedures and best practices. Collaborate with team members to plan fabrication sequences, solve technical issues, and meet production deadlines. Use office software such as Excel, Word, and other standard tools to complete basic documentation and record-keeping. Take initiative to identify and implement practical solutions to fabrication and assembly challenges. Essential Skills At least 2 years of experience as a fabricator or boilermaker. General mechanical knowledge and understanding of fabrication processes. Proficiency in MIG welding, with additional skill in stick and TIG welding. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and execute requirements accurately. Experience working with layouts and developments for forming and bending operations. Knowledge and practical experience with plasma cutting machines. Ability to operate fabrication equipment such as press brake, plasma cutter, lathe, mill, drill press, MIG and stick welders, bandsaw, and power tools. Competence in using Microsoft Excel, Word, and other office software. Good communication skills for effective coordination with team members and site personnel. Ability to work well with others in a shop and field environment. Demonstrated initiative and problem-solving skills to find solutions to fabrication and assembly issues. Trustworthy, reliable, and able to work independently when required. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working with carbon steel and aluminum in a fabrication environment. Experience with stainless steel fabrication, sheet metal work, and flux core welding. Experience manufacturing products for the defense or government contracting industry. Welding certifications such as AWS or equivalent. Experience fabricating fencing systems, gates, or structural frames. Familiarity with quality inspections, measurement tools, and documentation practices. Experience operating forklifts or overhead cranes in a shop environment. Background in production welding, assembly, and fitting of metal components. Ability to read and work from detailed blueprints and layout drawings for complex assemblies. Comfort using hand tools and power tools for grinding, fitting, and finishing operations. Experience with robotics or automated fabrication equipment is a plus. Why Work Here? Work Environment The position is based in a metal fabrication shop that uses equipment such as press brakes, plasma cutters, lathes, mills, drill presses, MIG and stick welders, bandsaws, and a wide range of hand and power tools. The facility is not climate controlled, so it can be cold in the winter and hot in the summer, with fans and bay doors providing airflow. Work is primarily performed in the shop, with periodic travel to customer sites for installation and remedial work, sometimes for extended periods of up to two weeks. The environment is fast-paced and production-oriented, with a strong emphasis on safety, proper equipment use, and maintaining an organized work area. Attire should be appropriate for a fabrication shop, including durable work clothing and suitable protective gear in line with safety requirements. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Fredericksburg, VA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $32.00/hr.
