Summary Big Sun Solar is seeking a skilled and self-motivated Solar PV Service Technician to join our established service team of three technicians supporting commercial & industrial (C&I) and community solar assets across Texas. This field-based role is responsible for diagnosing, troubleshooting, and resolving performance issues across a diverse portfolio of operating solar PV systems. The ideal candidate brings strong electrical and solar troubleshooting skills, the ability to work independently across multiple sites, and a commitment to maximizing system uptime and energy production for our clients. Key Responsibilities Perform scheduled and corrective maintenance on C&I and community solar PV systems, including rooftop, carport, and ground-mount configurations. Diagnose and troubleshoot system underperformance, equipment faults, and alarms using monitoring platforms, string-level data, and field testing equipment. Inspect, test, and replace failed components including inverters, combiners, fuses, disconnect switches, string wiring, and monitoring hardware. Conduct IV curve tracing, insulation resistance testing, and thermal imaging to identify module and string-level issues. Perform inverter commissioning, firmware updates, and configuration changes in coordination with manufacturers and monitoring providers. Respond to service calls and emergency dispatch across Texas; prioritize and manage workload across multiple active sites. Complete detailed service reports documenting findings, work performed, parts used, and site conditions for each visit. Coordinate with monitoring teams, utility representatives, and site contacts to restore system interconnection and resolve outage conditions. Maintain service vehicle, tools, test equipment, and spare parts inventory to ensure readiness for field dispatch. Identify recurring issues and communicate findings to the service manager to support warranty claims, vendor escalations, or engineering review. Support new system commissioning and performance verification as needed. Adhere to all OSHA safety standards, arc flash protocols, fall protection requirements, and company safety policies on every site visit.
Qualifications Required:
3+ years of hands-on experience servicing or installing commercial solar PV systems. Strong working knowledge of solar PV system components including string and central inverters, combiners, DC and AC wiring, and monitoring systems. Proficiency with electrical test equipment including multimeters, clamp meters, IV curve tracers, and insulation resistance testers. Ability to read and interpret single-line diagrams, wiring schematics, and O&M documentation. Experience with major inverter platforms (e.g., SMA, Solaredge, Fronius, ABB/Fimer, Schneider, or similar). Working knowledge of NEC Article 690, OSHA standards, and safe electrical work practices including LOTO and arc flash procedures. Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose complex system issues independently in the field. Valid Texas driver's license with a clean driving record; ability to travel statewide with overnight stays as needed. OSHA 10 certification required.
Preferred:
Journeyman Electrician license or progress toward licensure.
NABCEP PV
Installation Professional or PV Associate certification. Experience with community solar or utility-interconnected systems. Familiarity with monitoring platforms such as AlsoEnergy, PowerTrack, SolarEdge monitoring, or similar. Experience performing thermal imaging, IV curve tracing, or drone-assisted inspections. First Aid / CPR certification. Experience working with ERCOT-interconnected systems or Texas utility coordination.
Skills and Competencies:
Strong independent troubleshooting and diagnostic abilities in a field environment. High attention to detail with thorough and accurate service documentation habits. Effective communication skills for coordinating with clients, site contacts, and internal teams. Ability to manage multiple service priorities across a geographically dispersed portfolio. Self-directed work ethic with the ability to operate autonomously in remote field locations. Commitment to safety, system reliability, and delivering a high standard of service to clients. Physical Requirements Ability to lift and carry up to 75 lbs (inverters, panels, and equipment). Comfortable working at heights including rooftops, elevated platforms, and ladders. Ability to work in outdoor environments across Texas in varying and extreme weather conditions. Frequent bending, kneeling, climbing, and sustained physical activity throughout the workday. Regular statewide travel with overnight stays required; valid driver's license mandatory. Benefits Competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
