Position Summary The Assistant Athletic Trainer reports to the associate athletic director, sports medicine and to the Vice President for athletics. The Assistant Athletic Trainer is an active member of the sports medicine team intimately involved with injury prevention, recognition, and treatment for Upper Iowa University student-athletes while maintaining accurate records of student-athletes' physicals, injuries, rehabilitation programs, and doctor consultations. The assistant athletic trainer must assist in providing all athletic training services, as necessary, for all sports and the athletics department as assigned by the associate athletic director, sports medicine. The assistant athletic trainer must also meet the professional development and service expectations of Upper Iowa University. Position Responsibilities Reports to associate athletic director, sports medicine and Vice President for athletics. Follow the NATA code of ethics, NATA governing statements, and NCAA sports medicine guidelines for athletic trainers. Maintains accurate records of student-athletes' at UIU which includes but not limited to physicals, medical histories, injuries, rehabilitation programs, and physician appointments. Coordinate doctor visits for injured student-athletes of assigned sports. Coordinate medical coverage (athletic trainer, physician, or EMS) for home and away events as necessary for assigned sports. Provides daily updated injury reports to all coaches of assigned sports. Assists in maintenance of athletic training inventory. Assists in maintenance of safe and functional athletic training equipment. Assists with NCAA and UIU drug testing programs. Assists in the development and enforcement of policies and procedures for smooth operation in the athletic training facility. Performs other duties as assigned by the associate athletic director, sports medicine and athletic directors. Key Competencies Proficient with preventing, recognizing, evaluating, and treating athletic injuries. Experience with maintaining accurate records of student-athlete injuries and other medical documents. Upper Iowa University uses the ATS program for this. Ability to communicate efficiently with other staff members, head coaches, student-athletes, parents, and many medical professionals. Minimum Qualifications Earned a master's degree in athletic training or related field from an accredited university or college. Certified athletic trainer by the Board of Certification, Inc. and in good standing with this organization. Licensed as an athletic trainer in the state of Iowa or eligible for licensure. Current certification/training in BLS CPR, AED, and first aid.
