New Jersey-Based Public Works General Contractor Job Type:
Full-Time About the Role Brockwell & Carrington Contractors, Inc. is seeking a Junior Construction Estimator / Assistant Estimator with 2.5+ years of experience in the public works sector. This is a ground-floor opportunity for an estimator who wants to sharpen their skills on complex building and renovation projects ranging from $10M to $100M — and grow into a senior estimating role. You'll work directly alongside our lead and senior estimators through every phase of the bid process, from document review through award and buyout. If you have a serious interest in both conceptual estimating and hard-bid plan-and-spec work, we want to hear from you. What You'll Do Estimating & Takeoffs Support lead and senior estimators in developing complete cost estimates — labor, materials, equipment, and subcontracted scope. Review construction documents (plans, specifications, and addenda) to develop a thorough understanding of project requirements. Perform and organize quantity takeoffs for specialty items, finishes, furnishings, and building envelope components (windows, doors, etc.) with minimal oversight. Bid Coordination & Subcontractor Management Prepare and distribute Invitations to Bid to subcontractors for all non-self-performed scopes of work. Solicit subcontractor participation, track bid coverage, and follow up to ensure adequate pricing is received. Organize and present incoming subcontractor proposals to the lead/senior estimator for review. Ensure all required subcontractor documentation and paperwork is current and on file prior to bid day. Prepare, submit, and track pre-bid RFIs; distribute responses to the estimating team and bidding subcontractors. Bid Administration Maintain and update project bid documents, incorporating addenda and supplemental materials as issued. Prepare bid package documents for submission. Assist with bid-day negotiations to secure competitive pricing. Support post-bid negotiations and project buyout following successful awards, as needed. What We're Looking For Experience & Knowledge 2.5+ years in construction estimating or project management with a verifiable track record of accuracy and efficiency. General contractor and public works experience is a strong plus. Full proficiency in reading and interpreting construction documents — drawings, specifications, addenda, and bid forms. Working knowledge of building structural, civil, and MEP systems, as well as general building codes, construction types, and means and methods. Familiarity with construction scheduling concepts. Skills & Attributes Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel for bid compilation, databases, and cost tracking, as well as Bluebeam for digital takeoffs and document markup, BuildingConnected for subcontractor prequalification and bid management, and Procore for project management and document control. Comfortable navigating cloud-based plan rooms and FTP sites. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Personable and professional — able to build and maintain productive relationships with subcontractors and suppliers. Comfortable negotiating with subcontractors for both competitive pricing and scope clarity. Detail-oriented, organized, and self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple bids under tight deadlines. A team player who works well in a support role alongside lead and senior estimators. Genuine willingness to put in the time and effort required to develop into an advanced estimator.
