Job Description

The Assistant Director of Finance supports the Vice President of Finance and serves as a key accounting leader responsible for the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of all financial operations. Under the guidance of the Vice President of Finance, the Assistant Director oversees accounting functions, financial reporting, internal controls, and audit coordination. This role is critical in safeguarding organizational assets, maintaining strong financial systems, and supporting strategic decision-making through accurate and timely financial information. The Assistant Director of Finance also provides essential administrative, logistical, and operational support to ensure the smooth and efficient functioning of the nonprofit's finance department. This includes supporting document management, internal communications, financial reporting preparation, grant documentation workflows, and day‑to‑day administrative needs. Accounting & Financial Operations Under the direction of the Vice President of Finance, direct all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, cash management, and reconciliations. Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and year‑end close processes. Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards. Maintain and improve internal controls, accounting procedures, and financial policies. Monitor cash flow and support financial forecasting and analysis. Oversee purchasing and expenditures of all operating and administrative expenses. Oversee expense report processing. Reporting, Grants & Compliance Develop internal financial reports for leadership and the Board of Directors. Oversee accounting for restricted, unrestricted, and temporarily restricted funds. Ensure proper allocation, tracking, and reporting of grant funds. Support grant budget development, financial reporting, and required submissions. Assist in coordinating annual audits and preparing supporting documentation. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations. Collaboration & Administrative Support Collaborate with programmatic and administrative leadership to ensure budgeting accuracy. Partner with the Vice President of Finance on long‑term planning and financial systems improvements. Organize and maintain financial files and documentation. Coordinate financial communication across departments. Support preparation of materials for board meetings, audits, and internal presentations. Qualifications Education & Experience Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or MBA preferred) 5-7 years of progressive fiscal management experience Experience in nonprofit accounting required; experience with grant funding strongly preferred Skills & Competencies Knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit financial practices Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including advanced excel skills, QuickBooks, SalesForce and financial systems. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication abilities High attention to detail with strong organizational skills and time-management abilities.
