Hiring Salary $110,701.50 - $177,138.00 Annually Description Benefits Questions Introduction The Department of Transportation is looking for a dynamic and experienced leader who wants to join a high performing team of professionals to better the quality of life for the community through planning, engineering, and building of multimodal transportation facilities. If you are a motivated, hardworking individual who has a passion for improving mobility, the Department is searching for the next Assistant Director of Transportation to lead the Transportation Planning, Traffic Safety and Inspections Division. Duties focus on providing guidance, support, and overseeing Department programs and activities related to long range transportation planning, development and impact cases review, traffic safety, and inspections of roadway related facilities. This position will coordinate with the Planning Office, Public Works Department, Department of Development Services, and other agencies on transportation planning, traffic safety, and inspections related matters. This highly responsible position functions as a subject matter expert in transportation, safety, and mobility planning and represents the Department at Board of County Supervisor meetings and Planning Commission meetings. This position is a key leader within the largest and most successful locality led transportation construction program in the Commonwealth. The successful candidate will offer their excellent leadership, technical, communication and organizational skills to guide and oversee the transportation planning, traffic safety, and inspections functions of the Department of Transportation. The Department is seeking a strong leader with an in-depth knowledge of the transportation field. As the Assistant Director of Transportation, the chosen candidate will manage and oversee the County's regional and long-range transportation planning efforts; manage the review of development and impact cases to include Rezonings, Special Use Permits, Proffer Amendments, Comprehensive Plan Amendments, Public Facility Reviews, Traffic Impact Studies, Temporary Activity Permits; oversee the review of development site and subdivision plans to ensure the Design and Construction Standards Manual are met; provide input on the planning and development of transportation projects in the Capital Improvement Program; monitor projects and programs that address traffic safety issues in the County; oversee efforts related to the inspection of roadway facilities; manage specialized planning projects, formulate and communicate transportation recommendations to elected officials and other agencies; and represent the Department at Planning Commission, Board of County Supervisors and other transportation-related meetings. This position will provide transportation and technical solutions to complex mobility problems and challenging situations and work diligently with other County agencies and community groups to achieve the County and Departmental vision and goals.Minimum Requirements:
High school diploma or G.E.D. and 8 years of experience in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning or closely related field, along with supervisory experience in a government setting. The selected individual must have exceptional communication skills, provide excellent customer service, and have solid technical and analytical skills. The successful candidate must be enthusiastic and passionate about planning and improving Prince William County's multimodal transportation network. Excellent work ethic, ability to prioritize workload efficiently, creativity in planning solutions, and the drive to proactively learn and contribute to the achievements of our team are essential for the success of this position. This person will work under the direct supervision of the Director of Transportation & Capital Construction.Preferences:
Bachelor's degree in relevant field (e.g., urban planning, transportation planning, transportation engineering, or civil engineering) is preferred. AICP Certification or Professional Engineer License is preferred. The successful candidate will possess the professional skills required to perform analytical duties, thorough and effective problem solving, critical decision making, excellent communication skills, the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and adjust priorities and project as necessary; the ability to lead a team; and the ability to provide prompt and effective customer service to various stakeholders.Work Schedule:
Standard business hours (in office) and occasional night meetings.Special Requirements:
This position will require the ability to operate a government vehicle to attend various meetings and forums throughout and outside the County.Starting Salary Range :
