Assistant Librarian (Part-Time) Redwood Day 3245 Sheffield Avenue Oakland, CA 94602 www.rdschool.org Redwood Day is a vibrant K-8 school where students, faculty, and staff all learn together on our four-acre campus in the heart of Oakland. Job Description The Assistant Librarian supports the Librarian in managing the School's 12,000-title collection. The Assistant Librarian collaborates with the Head Librarian to plan for and teach K-2 library specialist classes. The Assistant Librarian assists with online databases, catalog resource lists and collections, student research projects, library displays, events, book processing, acquisition and de-selection, along with other duties as assigned. Essential Job Functions Perform regular library maintenance, including by: Checking books in and out Processing new books Shelving books Continuing collection development Weeding books Creating rotating book displays Creating signage Reading shelves Communicating with students and families regarding student accounts Collecting books from K-2 classrooms Plan, organize, and teach K-2 Library classes Demonstrate mastery of subject matter, instructional skills, and resource materials for K-2 Library courses Establish a safe and inclusive environment for all students Monitor and maintain a positive classroom environment that supports school-wide behavioral expectations Utilize a variety of effective instructional and classroom management techniques Use available technology/instructional media to enhance students' learning experiences Provide consistent, immediate feedback to student learning Work with classroom teachers, as determined by the Head Librarian, to assist with online information resources & research that support the curriculum Attend regular library staff meetings, specialist meetings, and curriculum meetings, along with occasional all-staff meetings Attend planning meetings and assist with all aspects of the Book Fair, including supervising classes and student browsing periods Help plan and attend the middle school Book Beat event Supervise library during student recesses, when open Help plan recess parties Help plan and support library sponsored author visits Establish and maintain appropriate relationships with students, parents/guardians, staff, and community members by communicating tactfully, courteously, and confidentially Supervise assigned students during assigned duty periods (morning, recess, lunch, etc.) Complete the specialist newsletter quarterly Fulfill other duties as assigned
Essential Qualifications:
B.A. in related field; Masters in Library Science or coursework in Library Science preferred Experience integrating technology in curriculum Strong classroom management skills Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion Schedule and Hours This role starts August 12, 2026. This is a part-time (.5FTE), non-exempt position. Classes are typically scheduled in the late mornings and afternoons, Monday-Friday.Pay Scale:
Redwood Day offers highly competitive compensation and benefits. The anticipated pay range the school reasonably expects to pay candidates for the Assistant Librarian role is $36.25 to $42.54 hourly, depending on factors such as experience and education.
