Position Summary and Key Responsibilities The Assistant Coach for Men's & Women's Volleyball supports the Head Coaches in building, sustaining, and advancing a competitive programs that reflects the mission of McKendree University and the standards of McKendree Athletics. This position is expected to operate with professionalism, initiative, loyalty, discretion, and a championship-level commitment to student-athlete development, competitive excellence, academic progress, compliance, recruiting, and day-to-day program organization.
Key Responsibilities:
Coaching / Teaching / Mentoring - 45% Assist in planning and executing organized, high-level practices, film sessions, individual training, scouting walk-throughs, and match preparation. Teach technical and tactical skills with clear language, consistent cues, and position-specific feedback. Assist with lineup evaluation, depth chart discussions, match adjustments, serving and blocking strategies, and opponent-specific game planning. Use video, analytics, and performance data to support player development, match preparation, and post-match review. Communicate with student-athletes in a professional, direct, and constructive manner that supports trust, accountability, and team standards. Help monitor academic progress, class accountability, study expectations, and student-athlete well-being as assigned. Aides the head coach in making connections between athletics and the mission of McKendree University. Contributes to an environment of fairness, commitment, and positive sportsmanship with athletes, parents, coaches, officials, and fans Develops a positive rapport with McKendree University personnel including students, athletes, coaches, faculty, and staff. Develops a community engagement strategy and ensures a positive experience for all parties Assists the Head Coach in analyzing strengths and weaknesses of specific student-athletes and develops skills to enhance their ability to effectively compete at the intercollegiate level. Assists the Head Coach in developing a program for student-athletes who are able to compete at the intercollegiate level, adhering at all times to the policies and procedures set forth by McKendree University, the Athletics Department, NCAA, or other national organization and conference for which the sport is affiliated. Recruiting / Roster Management - 25% Identify, evaluate, communicate with, and recruit prospective student-athletes who fit McKendree Volleyball academically, athletically, culturally, and financially. Assist with building and maintaining recruiting boards, position needs, prospect evaluations, campus visit schedules, follow-up communication, and recruit family education. Represent the program at club events, showcases, high school events, USA Volleyball events, and recruiting periods as assigned. Complete all recruiting activities in compliance with NCAA, institutional, and department policies. Assists the Head Coach in recruiting quality students-athletes to McKendree University in compliance with the NCAA or other applicable national organization. This includes contacting recruits via telephone, mail or visits; evaluation; processing of recruiting paperwork; meeting with prospective student-athletes and parents; ensuring recruits are aware of school, NCAA, or other applicable national organization and conference policies; coordination with Admissions and Financial Aid personnel; and signing the recruit.
Operations / Administration
- 20% Coordinate or assist with team travel, itineraries, meals, hotel lists, bus communication, tax-exempt documentation, practice schedules, facility needs, equipment, gear distribution, and receipts as assigned. Communicate upward quickly and clearly when operational issues arise. Help maintain schedules, travel forms, compliance and recruiting paperwork, and equipment inventory. Assist with camps, clinics, alumni engagement, community engagement, fundraising, social media coordination, and special events. Attends all required meetings related to the team as directed by the head coach. Pass the NCAA recruiting exam yearly. Helps the head coach communicate accurately with the athletic department including schedules, transportation, rosters, and results. Creates a safe environment for the athletes of the team including facility supervision-practice, competition and locker rooms. Makes suggestions for equipment needs to the head coach and helps with the management of all current equipment Manages aspects of the team as directed by the head coach Reports all NCAA/GLVC/MIVA and conference rules violation immediately to the Head Coach and Director of Athletics or Sports Administrator. Compliance, Safety, and Professional Conduct Maintain current CPR/AED certification and follow all athletic training policies related to student-athlete health and safety. Obtain appropriate medical treatment for student-athletes in the event of injury or medical emergency during team activities. Attend required NCAA, conference, department, compliance, rules education, and staff meetings. Report any known or suspected NCAA, conference, university, or department rules violation immediately to the Head Coach and appropriate athletics administrator. Maintain professional boundaries in all student-athlete communication. Team communication should occur through approved channels and, when appropriate, include another staff member. Maintain confidentiality regarding personnel matters, roster decisions, recruiting information, scholarship discussions, student-athlete welfare, and internal staff conversations. Adhere to McKendree University, Athletics Department, NCAA, and other governing body policies. Current Program Needs Full-time investment in a men's & women's volleyball program with national-level expectations and a demanding year-round recruiting, training, competition, and operations calendar. Daily organization that allows the Head Coaches to focus on leadership, competitive strategy, fundraising, roster management, department priorities, and broader program advancement. Consistent support in recruiting high-level prospects, retaining the right student-athletes, and continuing the program's success. Modern skill set in video, analytics, social media awareness, recruiting communication, and athlete development. Ability to work in a lean-staff environment where initiative, follow-through, and problem-solving are essential. Qualifications Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree required. Collegiate playing or coaching experience, or comparable high-level club/professional/USA Volleyball experience. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of volleyball technical skills, systems, training methods, safety practices, and competitive strategy. Ability to travel, work nights and weekends, and manage a non-traditional athletics schedule. Ability to pass NCAA recruiting certification if recruiting off campus. Valid driver's license and ability to meet institutional travel requirements, if applicable.
Preferred Qualifications:
College volleyball coaching experience. Recruiting experience with high school, club, transfer, international, and/or junior college prospects. Experience using video/statistical platforms for scouting and player development. Strong organizational skills with demonstrated ability to manage travel, logistics, communication, and administrative details. Experience with camps, fundraising, alumni relations, social media coordination, or community engagement. Demonstrated ability to develop student-athletes athletically, academically, socially, and professionally. Work Conditions Work schedule varies based on recruiting, practice, competition, travel, camps, department obligations, and student-athlete needs. Evening, weekend, holiday, and overnight travel responsibilities are required. This position requires physical presence at practices, competitions, meetings, team functions, recruiting events, and assigned athletics department activities unless otherwise approved by the Head Coach.
