Position Summary The Vice Chair of Clinical Operations for the Department of Emergency Medicine serves as an academic department leader, both accountable and responsible for the success of the tri-partite mission of both IU Health and the Indiana University School of Medicine. The primary responsibility is ensuring the highest quality emergency care. This requires building a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary,prehensive, patient-oriented approach to care. The Vice Chair, Clinical Operations is ultimately responsible for the appropriateness, quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of the medical care delivered within the clinical service. They are also responsible for ensuring the education and research missions of the department are prioritized. Thus, creating an ecosystem and culture w all 3 missions succeed.
The Vice Chair has a matrixed reporting relationship, working closely with the Hospital Leadership - Chief Medical Officer, Nursing and Administrative leadership, IU Health Medical Group (IUHMG) leadership, and Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) - Department of Emergency Medicine leadership to:
- Develop and implement clinical policies and guidelines
- Assess clinical activities and performance
- Assist with monitoring and attaining fiscal and utilization objectives
- Assurepliance with appropriate regulatory accrediting and credentialing/privileging standards
- Facilitate the success of the educational and research missions.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Some responsibilities may be delegated to direct reports as appropriate. 1. Lead all aspects of the emergency medicine clinical mission at the IU Health Adult Academic Health Center (Methodist), Eskenazi Health, West, North, Fishers, and Tipton Hospitals (affiliated hospitals)- Partner with the Vice Chair, PEM Division to lead the clinical mission at Riley Downtown, PEM North, and PEM Fishers
- Foster and sustain a cohesive "one department" culture across multiple affiliated clinical sites, ensuring appropriate alignment in values, standards, and operational practices despiteanizational and geographic diversity 2. Supervise medical directors.
- Partner with individual medical directors to develop site-specific strategies to meet department-wide goals as well as those of regional and/or facility leadership.
- Work with hospital leadership to ensure site directors are meeting hospital and system goals and have the appropriate resources and support to do so
- Lead quarterly (at minimum) site directors meeting 3. Partner with the APP Director to develop APP-specific strategies to meet long- and short-term department-wide goals 4. Maintain relationships with hospital leadership
- Regularly visit and support operations at all affiliated hospitals 5. Maintain and build faculty and APP staffing models with attention to:
- Clinical volumes, national benchmarks, case mix ratios
- Site specific leadership or skill needs (POCUS, educational oversight, administrative pipeline, quality, etc.
- Wellness 6. Create the strategy to achieve or exceed national benchmarks on all operational metrics 7. Responsible for strategic planning and execution of increasing Emergency Medicine foot within IU Health facilities and system-wide (examples: observation medicine, urgent care support, telehealth, etc.) 8. Transform the culture of patient experience at all affiliated hospitals
- Goal of top decile Emergency Department net promoter scores relative to peer institutions 9.
IUSM - EM
Faculty to ensure appropriate workforce development and staffing at all affiliated hospitals- Maintain active role in department recruitment activities to ensure new faculty meet strategic mission requirements.
- Assist in the recruitment of faculty and resident talent with the goal of expanding the faculty pipeline for identified needs such as administrative, research, and scholarly interests.
- Develop workforce plans as needed for site expansion, new strategic operational initiatives, and system needs. 10. In partnership with the Vice Chair of Clinical and Academic Administration and Service Line Administrators,
- Supervise IUHMG administrative practice management staff
- Manage operational, professionalism, and personnel issues
- Manage fully supported hospital budgets and variances
- Collaborate with Revenue Cycle Services on revenue and collections efficiency 11. Participate in Department annualpensation planning, including incentive plan measure development and reporting 12. Participate in appropriate IUSM and IUHMGmittees, leadership development, and other invited functions 13. Optimize integration of research, scholarship, and teaching within all affiliated hospitals
- In partnership with the Department Chair and Vice Chair team build strong, research team to capitalize on administrative output.
- Identify strong informatics partners in support of the research mission
- design or facilitate a method to optimize integration of research recruitment/trial enrollment for all affiliated hospitals 14. Identify and assist with the implementation of strategic activities or projects that will generate positive returns on departmental investments or create strategic partnerships centered around our clinical mission.
- Examples could include:munity engagement partnerships, research projects, population health initiatives, expansion of observation medicine, telemedicine, or any project which generates pilot and preliminary date for future grant submissions.

Basic Qualifications Candidates must have an MD or DO and be board certified in Emergency Medicine with the ability to obtain a license to practice medicine in Indiana. Candidates must have at least 3 years of professional time spent in clinical practice and 3 years of leadership experience, ideally within clinical affairs or clinical operations, including medical director role, quality improvement, process improvement, engagement, and patient experience. Additionally, candidates must have a proven record of collaborative success working with individuals throughout a healthcareanization and a record of successful work within a highly matrixed environment.
