This is a professional position that supports the full range of athletic programs by meeting the individual needs of student-athletes. This position will provide comprehensive athletic healthcare, including but not limited to injury prevention, clinical evaluation and diagnosis, immediate care, treatment, rehabilitation and reconditioning, organization and administration, and professional responsibility.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Ability to professionally relate to and collaborate with co-workers, students and community members Ability to understand and maintain confidentiality Ability to use technology effectively to complete tasks Ability to report to work daily and on time Ability to organize, supervise, coordinate and establish priorities of tasks to be completed Ability to work independently in the absence of detailed instructions and to follow complex oral and/or written instructions Ability to communicate orally or in writing, courteously and tactfully, with staff, students, parents, and the community in a timely manner Possess excellent time management skills and ability to take initiative and make decisions within assigned responsibility in a challenging, fast-paced professional environment and be flexible in work responsibilities and hours Possess knowledge of the programs, policies, and procedures of the St. Mary's County Public School System Possess knowledge of federal, state and local laws, regulations, and best practices involving health and safety in athletics Ability to create a safe and productive environment Possess knowledge of current research and trends in athletics and athletic training Ability to work a flexible schedule (both yearly and daily, Saturdays, and over holiday breaks) Performs other related duties as required or assignedDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Monitors the local school athletics program to ensure compliance with NFHS, NATA, MPSSAA and SMCPS policies and regulations Assessment and evaluation of student-athletes' needs Collaborative consultation with students, coaches, and families Develops preventative, rehabilitative, and emergency medical care programs and plans for student-athletes Advises athletes and coaching staff on techniques related to injury prevention, care, and conditioning Provides initial review of physician's physical evaluation of athlete and athlete medical history forms for indications of possible physical conditions which preclude participation in athletics Evaluates injuries/illnesses and interprets clinical findings to determine the appropriate participation status and injury rehabilitation plan Provides first aid and initial assessment to visiting team athletes during games and determines appropriate participation status of injured athletes Performs preventative taping, wrapping, and padding of injured areas Assists with rehabilitation of injuries and other medical matters Operates therapeutic devices and equipment Maintains inventory of appropriate first aid and medical supplies, including support with automated external defibrillators (AEDs) Overseas and manages athletic training facilities and equipment in a safe and sanitary condition Provides required training to coaches based on MPSSAA regulations Supervises safety factors of competition by ensuring elimination of undue hazards Acts as a liaison between and establishes and maintains effective working relationships with administration, activities coordinator, coaches, school staff, student athletes, families, physicians, and other community providers Consults with teachers, administrators, activities coordinator, and other staff as needed regarding academic support for student-athletes recovering from injury Maintain a stocked training room including team medical bags Directly provide or support the following training: care and prevention, heat acclimatization, CPR, AED, cold water immersion, concussion, etc. for all contracted SMCPS coaches. Monitors and adjusts heat acclimatization plan and site-specific emergency action plan consistent with MPSSAA regulations and guidelines and Maryland HB 836 Supports the collection and documentation of all student athletic forms under the direction of the activities coordinator. Assist activities coordinator on preparing facilities and fields for games/practices Maintains medical records and documentation for all student-athletes Clerical tasks such as assisting with budgets, restocking supplies and maintaining inventory Inform school nurses of any concussions or injuries of athletes in order to jointly work out a modified academic plan if needed Supports school nurses with CPR and AED training Supports school nurses with the process of AED equipment inspection and maintenance Maintain Evaluation and Treatment Protocols with the Maryland Board of PhysiciansQUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Bachelor's (prior to 2022) or Master's (2022 and beyond) degree in athletic training Athletic Trainer Certification through the Board of Certification (BOC) Possess or be eligible for an Athletic Training licensure through the Maryland Board of Physicians Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certificationPreferred:
Experience working in a school setting Clinical experience as a certified athletic trainerTERM OF EMPLOYMENT
