Baker for General Store and Cafe

The Old Brick Store is a 170-year-old institution in beautiful Charlotte, with a long history of being the town's general store and community hub. Under new ownership since 2023, the newest chapter has carried on in that tradition and modernized its offerings as a cafe and shop with a top-notch coffee program and a seasonal menu of breakfast and lunch items and house-made baked goods. We also carry a curated selection of quality staples and specialty ingredients, natural wines, artisan made gifts, design objects, and printed matter, often focusing on local makers and purveyors. Currently, we are baking in-house: sourdough bagels and English muffins, biscuits, croissants, cookies, assorted pastries and sweet treats, sourdough bread and focaccia. We strive for high quality and delicious food that is at once accessible and convenient, quietly ambitious, and speaks to the seasons. Brainstorming, new ideas, and curiosity are always welcome in our kitchen! Baker We are seeking a baker with at least two years of experience to join our team. This is an early morning shift that requires reliability and the ability to follow recipes well, and it is open to a wide range of experience levels: from bakers starting out in their careers to pastry chefs who have a command of naturally leavened breads, Viennoiserie, cookies, cakes, and more. For the right person with experience, there will be a lot of creative freedom. For less experienced bakers, this is a great opportunity to dial in your skills with consistent work. The base wage is $20 per hour and may be more, depending on experience. Daily staff meals, including specialty coffees or teas provided. Store discounts on food and beverage as well as retail items. Pay raises are awarded based on merit and job performance. Responsibilities Punctuality and reliability Ability to follow recipes and baking guides closely Good organization, time management, and ability to work quickly and efficiently Keeping track of ingredients, pars, and supplies Managing special order fulfillment Knowledge of food safety and keeping workstations clean, sanitized, organized, and stocked throughout the shift Teamwork and sharing of knowledge Daily cleaning Skills & Requirements Ideal candidates have passion for baking and at least two years' experience. Ability to communicate clearly with colleagues, work as a team, follow instructions and work quickly, tidiness, and punctuality are required. This job also requires the ability to lift 50lbs, to stand for prolonged periods of time, weekend and holiday availability, and to interact with all types of people.
