Job Description

The Blue Mountain Lake Steward is an outdoor summer job on one of the most beautiful lakes in the Adirondacks. The Lake Steward monitors the day use and overnight camping sites on the islands of Blue Mountain Lake and educates the public about Leave No Trace recreational use of natural resources.
Qualifications:
Experience/comfort with engaging members of the public. Demonstrated commitment to ecological conservation and/or restoration. High school diploma or equivalent. Valid New York State Boater Safety Certificate (which can be obtained through an online course). Ability or willingness to learn how to operate a small boat with an outboard motor. Ability to use hand tools such as a shovel and axe, walk 3-5 miles, and move objects weighing 25 pounds. Responsibilities Patrolling the day use areas and campsites on Blue Mountain Lake and the lean-to on Utowana Lake. Providing education to the public about Leave No Trace camping and use of sensitive natural areas designed for overnight- and day-use on Blue Mountain Lake and the Eckford Chain, including Forest Preserve laws for camping/fire building in designated camping areas and tree cutting prohibitions. Providing education to the public about water quality, invasive species, and ecology. Communicating with DEC Forest Ranger and BMLS Board of Directors as needed. Monitoring shallow areas for aquatic invasive species and HABs (Harmful Algae Blooms). Removing garbage and goose poop and cleaning campsite and day use areas that were misused, including fire pits and privies. Performing light trail work on the Castle Rock Trail. Working in all weather conditions, including rain, hot and cool weather. Being affable, personable, and respectful of the public. Patrolling in an assigned uniform. Developing relationships with local businesses on the lake whose patrons recreate there. Presenting information about the Steward program at the annual meeting of the Blue Mountain Lake Association. Maintaining records to track use of the day-use and overnight camping. Completing a short report at the conclusion of the summer season. Hours of Work The BMLS project hires one seasonal FTE (5 day, 40 hours) and one part-time (2 day, 16 hours) who generally work from mid-June through late August or September. The position includes working on weekends, roughly 9 to 5, weather dependent. We often have a PT Steward who works weekends in May and through Columbus Day as needed (often weather dependent). The full-time position runs from mid-June to late August, synchronized with the academic calendar, and includes working on weekends, roughly 9 to 5, weather dependent, with two weekdays off. The part-time steward covers the full-time steward's summer weekdays off and can also work weekends in the shoulder periods of late May and early June plus late August through Columbus Day, as weather and availability allow.
