Job Description

Job Summary:
The Cattle Feed Yard Brander Technician plays a crucial role in the health and welfare of cattle within the feed yard operation. Responsible for providing skilled care and medical assistance to sick or injured cattle, the technician ensures proper treatment protocols are followed, maintains accurate records, and assists in implementing preventive health measures. This position requires strong animal handling skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to upholding animal welfare standards. They are the start of this animals life here on the yard. They assign them the identification number they will be identified by, they record the initial weights which predicate performance and add to the baseline for all decisions. Branders maintain diligent record of all the animals worked in a given day and the accurate count of all cattle worked. These individuals must be able to work cattle efficiently and calmly to maintain the standard of production.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Animal Health Management:
Provide timely and effective medication and identification to cattle who are new to the feedyard Monitor and assess the health status of cattle on a daily basis, identifying any signs of illness or distress. Collaborate with the attending veterinarian to maintain effective technique in administrating implants and medications. Administer vaccinations, medications, and other treatments following proper procedures and dosage guidelines.
Record Keeping:
Maintain accurate and detailed records of processing events, procedures, and outcomes for each animal. Input data into electronic record-keeping systems and ensure records are up-to-date and accessible for auditing purposes. Prepare reports on health status, treatment efficacy, and disease trends for management review.
Facility Maintenance:
Ensure cleanliness and sanitation of hospital facilities, equipment, and treatment areas to prevent the spread of disease. Properly store and handle medications, vaccines, and medical supplies to maintain efficacy and safety. Assist in maintaining and repairing equipment used in medical procedures and treatments.
Emergency Response:
Respond promptly to emergencies and provide immediate care to injured or distressed cattle. Implement emergency protocols to stabilize animals and minimize further harm until veterinary assistance is available. Communicate effectively with management and veterinary staff during emergency situations.
Health Monitoring and Prevention:
Conduct routine health checks and observations to identify potential health issues or disease outbreaks. Participate in disease surveillance programs and assist in implementing biosecurity measures to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Educate other personnel on proper animal handling techniques, biosecurity protocols, and disease prevention strategies.
