Mental Health Medical Billing Specialist Zen Therapy Behavioral Health Services is seeking a detail-oriented and organized Mental Health Medical Billing Specialist to join our growing private practice. This position is ideal for someone with experience in behavioral health insurance billing who is passionate about supporting clinicians so they can focus on providing exceptional client care.

Pay:

$23.00 per hour

Schedule:

Starting at 20 hours per week , with the opportunity for additional hours as the practice continues to grow. Position Summary The Mental Health Medical Billing Specialist will manage the insurance billing process from claim submission through payment reconciliation while ensuring compliance with payer requirements and HIPAA regulations. The ideal candidate has experience working with behavioral health claims, understands commercial and government insurance plans, and enjoys solving billing challenges. Responsibilities Submit electronic insurance claims accurately and timely. Monitor claim status and follow up on unpaid, denied, or rejected claims. Investigate and resolve claim denials and billing discrepancies. Verify client insurance eligibility and benefits. Post insurance and client payments. Process patient statements and manage outstanding balances. Communicate professionally with insurance companies regarding claims and authorizations. Maintain accurate billing records within the electronic health record (SimplePractice experience preferred). Ensure compliance with HIPAA, insurance regulations, and billing best practices. Collaborate with clinicians and administrative staff to resolve documentation or billing issues. Assist with month-end billing reconciliation and reporting. Stay current on changes in behavioral health billing regulations and payer policies. Qualifications Minimum of 2 years of medical billing experience (behavioral health or mental health billing strongly preferred). Knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, and insurance billing procedures. Experience with commercial insurance plans, Medi-Cal, Medicare, and managed care organizations preferred. Experience with claim appeals and denial management. Familiarity with SimplePractice or similar electronic health record systems preferred. Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities. Proficient with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace. Preferred Qualifications Experience billing for psychotherapy services. Knowledge of California behavioral health insurance regulations. Experience working with Blue Shield of California, Optum, Aetna, Cigna, Anthem, or other behavioral health payers. Understanding of supervisory billing and group practice billing structures is a plus.
