Summary:
In this critical role, we are seeking a competent and detail-oriented Medical Coder and Biller to support our surgical center's coding, billing, and revenue cycle operations. The Medical Coder and Biller will be responsible for reviewing medical documentation and accurately assigning Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS), and International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) codes for insurance claims and internal databases. The ideal candidate will have experience in medical coding and billing, with surgical and/or anesthesia coding and billing experience preferred. Experience with insurance verification, prior authorizations, claims processing, denials, and working with health insurance plans is also preferred.
Responsibilities include:
Extracting relevant information from patient records and medical documentation. Liaising with physicians, anesthesia providers, clinical staff, and other parties to clarify documentation and coding information. Examining medical records and documents for missing, incomplete, or inconsistent information. Assigning accurate CPT, HCPCS, and
ICD-10-CM
codes based on medical documentation. Ensuring documents are grammatically correct and free from typing and documentation errors. Performing chart audits to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with coding guidelines. Advising and providing education or training to physicians and staff regarding medical coding requirements and best practices. Ensuring compliance with medical coding policies, payer requirements, and applicable coding guidelines. Reviewing medical records and claims for accuracy prior to submission to insurance carriers. Preparing, submitting, and following up on insurance claims. Verifying patient insurance eligibility, benefits, and coverage as needed. Assisting with obtaining prior authorizations and pre-certifications for surgical procedures and services. Reviewing and addressing claim denials, rejections, underpayments, and other billing discrepancies. Communicating with health insurance companies regarding claims, authorizations, coverage, and reimbursement. Assisting with payment posting, accounts receivable follow-up, and resolution of outstanding balances. Supporting accurate and timely billing for surgical and anesthesia services. Maintaining knowledge of commercial insurance plans, Medicare, Medicaid, and other payer requirements. Identifying recurring coding, billing, authorization, or documentation issues and communicating opportunities for improvement. Maintaining patient confidentiality and ensuring compliance with HIPAA and applicable healthcare regulations.
