Job Description

Position performs all aspects of seasonal grounds operations such as mowing, trimming, edging, planting, weeding, and snow removal and ice control. The level of the Landscape Specialist position is dictated by the forementioned education and experience. Depending on the level of the position the incumbent may provide assistance to others in the planning, leadership and direction in the development and maintenance of landscaped areas and/or provides guidance on the proper maintenance of trees and other plants. Performs all aspects of grounds maintenance including; mowing, trimming, edging, weed control and removal, seeding, fertilizing, grounds clean-up including leaf removal, and snow and ice control operations. Maintains trees and other plants in a healthy condition and assists with the oversight of both in-house and contract maintenance of trees and other plants. Installs and maintains landscaped areas and provides guidance and direction to other grounds personnel involved in landscaping operations. Provides environmentally sensitive weed and pest control and provides guidance to others in these operations. In support of Berea College?s great commitments this position requires student supervision. The Supervision would include scheduling, assigning and approving work performed. Developing students about common workplace acumen and giving them tangible work experience is an expected outcome. Diploma/GED Landscape Specialist II H.S. Diploma/GED Landscape Specialist III H.S. Diploma/GED Bachelors/Associates Degree in Related Field, higher education/trade school Certification in Arboriculture or Horticulture Experience required to ensure success in this position: Landscape Specialist I Entry level, minimum of 0-2 years' experience in landscape maintenance/care Landscape Specialist II Minimum of 2 years' experience in landscape maintenance/care Landscape Specialist III Minimum of 5 years' experience in landscape maintenance/care Special skills, knowledge and abilities: Landscape Specialist I Knowledge of grounds and landscaping trades and materials Ability to follow direction of others in the maintenance of campus landscaping Ability to safely operate all types of landscaping equipment Landscape Specialist II Must meet all requirements of Landscape Specialist I Ability to apply weed and pest control using environmentally sensitive methods Moderate knowledge of plant varieties and life cycles Ability to supervise and provide proper instruction to student workers Landscape Specialist III Must meet all requirements of Landscape Specialist II Extensive knowledge of plant varieties and life cycles Ability to lead/supervise/train others to complete tasks safely and efficiently Assists in planning/execution of projects, renovations, and landscape design License, certification, or registration necessary: Landscape Specialist I Valid KY Driver's License Landscape Specialist II/III Valid KY Driver's License Ability to obtain state applicators license in category N3 within 90 days of employment Physical requirements: Physical capability for manual labor Ability to lift 50 pounds Ability to work in extreme conditions Environmental conditions: Working outside in weather extremes
