The Landscape Horticulturist maintains all aspects of the museum's outdoor landscape including historic gardens, ornamental gardens, walkways, museum roads, garden architectural elements, and parking lots. In addition to the landscape tasks, this position is an integral member of the Facilities Department and is tasked with assisting with events and wintertime buildings and grounds maintenance. While this position is year-round, landscape horticulture varies seasonally. Therefore, a diverse set of tasks will be performed throughout the year. The primary focus of the Landscape Horticulturist is to care for the gardens and landscape, including planting, pruning, and weeding gardens; assisting with greenhouse operations; mowing and string-trimming lawns and fence lines; maintaining walks and paths; and keeping the museum grounds clean and free of trash. This position also maintains architectural elements within the landscape including, arbors, wood and iron benches, and the greenhouse structure. Additionally, this position assists with event set up, clean up, and general assistance during events. In the fall, this position assists in Candlelight Stroll dried flower preparations. In winter, this position will perform tasks associated with building maintenance, and snow removal from walkways.

Fall:
Leaf pick up and removal Prepare gardens for winter Mow lawns String trim lawn and garden edges, fencelines, building foundations, etc. Assist with making Candlelight Stroll Decorations Tend greenhouse Tend chickens Assist with signature events
Winter:
Assist with Candlelight Stroll operations Paint and repair wood and iron garden elements Perform winter and general maintenance on mechanical and equipment and hand tools Perform basic building maintenance tasks like deep-clean, painting, minor carpentry Assist with snow removal in winter Tend greenhouse Assist with signature events
Additional Duties:
Assist with recordkeeping and labelling of plant collection Assist with Museum events as assigned by the Maintenance and Event Operations Manager Participate in all trainings and workshops required of Strawbery Banke Museum staff Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Strong knowledge of plant health and gardening techniques Demonstrated knowledge and experience of/with pruning a diverse range of species Experience with maintenance of mechanical yard equipment (oil change, winterizing, changing blades) Experience using ride-on mowers and, string trimmers
Education:
Associate's Degree in Horticulture, Plant Biology, Agriculture or related field preferred 3 years of experience in horticulture, landscaping, gardening, farming, or other related field Eager to learn new skills Positive, collegial attitude and ability to work cooperatively with others at all levels of the organization including direct reports, colleagues, supervisor, volunteers, and visitors of all ages, abilities, and cultural backgrounds.
Physical Requirements:
Must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodations. Work entails moving around the 10-acre site, for extended periods of time outdoors in all weather conditions. Must be able to bend, stoop, and kneel, and must be able to lift up to 50 lbs throughout the day. Work is conducted both indoors in a shared office space, and outdoors in all types of weather year-round. The essential duties of this position require regular attendance onsite, with limited capacity for remote work. One weekend day during the spring, summer, and fall is required as well as occasional evening work for special events (including event setup/cleanup) with schedule adjustments during the regular work week as necessary.
