Position Summary:
Ironstone Farm's Barn Manager oversees the general care and maintenance of our herd of hardworking therapy and recreational horses, ensuring their living spaces are kept neat and clean. This position is expected to have adequate equine experience and the willingness and ability to work holidays and weekends. The Barn Manager will ensure that Ironstone Farm is recognized as a premier provider of Therapeutic and Recreational riding opportunities and we are viewed as experts in best practices for caring for horses and our facilities.
Essential Functions:
The Barn Manager is responsible for completing these daily tasks between 7:00AM-7:00PM
Sole responsibility making sure the barn, paddocks, and spaces where equine supplies are kept, is organized, clean, and well maintained.
Ensuring the hay and grain routine is done properly throughout the day
Oversee turnout/ turn in and follows turnout chart/ instructions
Assists barn staff with cleaning stalls and ensures paddocks are all picked. Monitor there is enough clean bedding, and provide learning opportunities to staff when needed.
Dump wheelbarrows as needed.
Go around and check all outdoor and stall waters are cleaned, and refilled with fresh water
Assisting with basic farm repairs as directed
Informs Operations Director and Equine Manager of any necessary animal care and assists with basic medical care as needed and directed.
Supervises the morning/afternoon feeding crew including volunteer feeders and staff.
Performs other related work as required.
Assists Operations Director and Equine Manager with revising medical charts, daily checklists, and ensuring all protocols are followed under the guidance of the Equine Manager.
Assists Operations Manager with collecting/reporting weekly inventory; call vendors to confirm auto deliveries.
Ensure that daily tasks are complete and have been done according to protocol and submit a daily report to the Operations Director if needed.
Assists with training of assigned equine In addition to the above core tasks the Barn manager will: Keep an eye on the general well -being of the herd.
This includes daily checks and walk through of the property to ensure horses are healthy, happy, and have fresh water and hay. Also checking that fences are intact, horses do not have any obvious cuts or medical issues, and there are no hazardous items within their living environment from the night before. Perform basic medical tasks as instructed such as taking temperatures, administering medication, walking, blanketing and being available to the veterinarian, farrier, and dentist as needed.
Qualifications:
Understand the uniqueness of Ironstone Farm and its mission.
Excellent interpersonal skills, as this person interacts professionally with clients, employees, and equine personnel on a regular basis.
3-5 years of general horse experience required.
General and practical knowledge of standard practices in equine care; 3+ years of barn hand experience preferred.
General knowledge of the hazards of maintenance work and the associated safety precautions.
Practical knowledge of equipment and maintenance requirements and associated safety precautions
General knowledge and skill in the use of computer and software programs for word processing, database entry and communication.
Ability to work after business hours on an on-call basis.
Ability to deal effectively with management, subordinates and the general public. Effect On End Results

Accountability The hours for the Barn manager can range between 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM 4 days a week and 1 weekend day. Weekend and afternoon flexibility are a requirement with on-call hours as needed for horses or facilities that require additional care. This schedule includes being available during snow, rain and other weather-related events. Daily and weekly checklists submitted to Operations Director as indicated. A brief report on accomplishments, concerns and goals will be emailed to Operations Director at the end of each week. The Barn Manager is an employee of Challenge Unlimited and Ironstone Farm.
