The New Mexico Forestry Division retains lead responsibility for wildland fire management on all non-federal, non-tribal, and non-municipal lands, maintaining fire suppression capacities and emphasizing public and firefighters' safety. The Forestry Division promotes healthy, sustainable forests and watersheds in New Mexico for the benefit of current and future generations. Why does the job exist? This position is responsible for coordination of the district's wildland fire emergency hire staff and ensuring wildland fire engines and associated equipment, tools, and gear in proper working condition and ready and available for emergency wildland fire response at a moment's notice. The position will also assist the District Fire Management Officer implement education and outreach programs across the district which include FireWise, Ready, Set, Go, defensible space and the Smokey Bear Wildland Prevention campaign. Further, they may assist the District Forester with Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). How does it get done? The duties include communicating and coordination with uncooperative private landowners, cooperators, partner agencies, and stake holders while maintaining a safe work environment during fire suppression activities and assist in resolving disputes between suppression resources and private forest landowners. All of this is done while assuring that the Division stays in compliance with the applicable State Laws and Regulations. Through coordination with the District FMO, develop, coordinate and manage wildland fire training and education for district emergency staff and as applicable, providing technical assistance to landowners, tribes, local government and state and federal land managers with wildland fire training education, outreach and coordination of suppression resources during wildland fire response. This position is responsible for responding and coordinating wildland fire suppression actions across the district and support the District's Fire Program. Who are the customers? Primary customers are private forest land owners, cooperating natural resource agencies, local governments, tribal nations, and non-federal forest landowners. Minimum Qualification High school diploma or equivalent and three (3) seasons of experience in wildland fire, prescribed fire, fuels management, or forest/watershed restoration. Experience must include participation in wildland fire suppression, prescribed fire, or fuels treatment projects and field/fuel data collection activities. Must hold FFT1 and single resource trainee with a preference for crew boss (CRWB) or engine boss (ENGB) as defined in

PMS 3101.

Employment Requirements Must maintain and possess a current New Mexico Driver's License, Defensive Driving Certificate Must pass a yearly arduous pack test Working Conditions Work is preformed both in office and field setting. Employee may be exposed to inclement weather conditions and required to walk in steep rugged terrain. Employee may be exposed to excessive noise from power equipment and fire suppression apparatus for long periods. May be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays.
