The Trail Crew Technician is responsible for performing skilled manual labor to construct and maintain the 300-mile Cumberland Trail. This year-round position operates under the supervision of the Trail Crew Supervisor or Trail Crew Lead, supporting trail integrity and environmental protection in line with the organization's mission.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Trail Construction:
Build and maintain trail sections, including clearing paths, constructing structures (e.g., stone steps, water bars, etc.), and ensuring trail sustainability.
Trail Maintenance:
Regular inspection and repair of trails to ensure accessibility and safety. Tasks may include vegetation control, erosion prevention, and tread repair.
Driving and Equipment Operation:
Safely operate the work truck to transport tools, materials, and crew members to designated work sites.
Documentation:
Report hours worked, trail coordinates, and measured footage to the supervisor as needed for project tracking.
Tool Maintenance:
Proper maintenance of tools and equipment to ensure safe and efficient use.
Resource Protection:
Support the Cumberland Trail Conservancy's (CTC) resource protection efforts, including conservation and environmental stewardship.
Volunteer Interaction:
Assist and lead volunteers of various backgrounds and skill levels in trail work.
Qualifications:
Independent Work:
Proven ability to work independently in backcountry areas with minimal supervision.
Training & Certification:
Maintain Wilderness First Aid and CPR certifications (preferred). Participate in additional required training, such as chainsaw and crosscut saw certification, rockwork, rigging, and safe driving.
Communication:
Work collaboratively with supervisors, volunteers, and external partners to ensure clear and effective communication on trail-related matters.
Physical Endurance:
Strong hiking and outdoor experience, especially in challenging environments. capable of hiking up to 10 miles per day in rugged, mountainous terrain while carrying up to 50 lbs of equipment or gear. Comfortable working outdoors in adverse weather conditions for extended period.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Cell Phone Use:
Regular use of a cell phone for timekeeping, trail documentation, and communication.
Environmental Exposure:
Work in extreme weather conditions, including rain, snow, humidity, intense heat, and direct sunlight.
Physical Activity:
Must be able to hike extended distances (up to 10 miles per day), perform moderate lifting (up to 50 pounds), carry a backpack over rough terrain, and navigate wet and slippery surfaces.
Driving:
A valid driver's license is required. Access to a personal vehicle is preferred for commuting.
Health and Safety Risks:
Possible exposure to ticks, pests, uneven terrain, and other hazards typical of a backcountry environment.
Additional Information:
Term Length:
Full-time, year-round position (subject to weather-related scheduling flexibility).
Hourly Rate:
$15.00 - $17.00, based on experience and qualifications.
Gear Stipend:
A gear stipend will be provided, calculated based on average hours worked per quarter.
Location/Region:
Work will occur along the Cumberland Trail corridor from Cumberland Gap, TN to Chattanooga, TN.
Paid Holidays & PTO:
Employees receive 8 paid holidays per year. Paid time off (PTO) will accrue based on hours worked, in alignment with the organization's PTO accrual plan.
Weekend Availability:
Some weekend work may be required based on project needs and weather conditions.
