Norton Country Club is seeking a motivated, dependable, and experienced Assistant Golf Course Superintendent / Groundskeeper to join our Golf Course Maintenance Department. The Assistant Superintendent will work directly with the Golf Course Superintendent to oversee the daily maintenance and presentation of the golf course, practice areas, landscaping, and club grounds. This position plays an important role in maintaining the high-quality playing conditions and appearance expected by our members and guests. The ideal candidate will have strong turf-management knowledge, leadership skills, attention to detail, and a willingness to work hands-on with the grounds maintenance team.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist the Golf Course Superintendent with daily golf course maintenance operations. Help supervise, train, and direct seasonal and full-time groundskeeping employees. Plan and assign daily maintenance tasks to grounds staff. Maintain greens, tees, fairways, roughs, bunkers, and practice areas. Operate and oversee the safe operation of mowers, tractors, utility vehicles, aerators, sprayers, and other turf equipment. Assist with mowing schedules and turf-management practices. Perform and oversee aeration, verticutting, topdressing, seeding, fertilization, and other cultural practices. Assist with irrigation system operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs. Monitor turf conditions and identify disease, insect, drainage, irrigation, and other turf-related issues. Assist with chemical and fertilizer applications in accordance with applicable laws, label requirements, and club policies. Maintain landscaping, trees, shrubs, flower beds, and other club grounds. Maintain bunkers, cart paths, drainage areas, and course surroundings. Assist with golf course setup and preparation for daily play, tournaments, outings, and special events. Help prepare the course for seasonal openings, winter conditions, and spring recovery. Assist with snow, storm, and weather-related cleanup when necessary. Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, chemical applications, equipment maintenance, and other departmental activities. Inspect equipment and ensure proper cleaning, lubrication, and routine maintenance. Coordinate with the Superintendent regarding equipment repairs and replacement needs. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe maintenance facility. Enforce proper safety procedures and PPE requirements. Report injuries, hazards, equipment problems, and unsafe conditions immediately. Perform other duties as assigned by the Golf Course Superintendent or management.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum of 2-3 years of golf course, turf management, landscaping, or related grounds maintenance experience preferred. Previous supervisory or crew-leadership experience preferred. Knowledge of golf course turf maintenance and agronomic practices. Ability to operate commercial grounds and turf equipment. Mechanical aptitude and ability to perform basic equipment maintenance. Knowledge of irrigation systems and troubleshooting preferred. Strong organizational and time-management skills. Ability to communicate effectively with employees, management, members, and vendors. Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a team. Strong attention to detail and pride in maintaining quality playing conditions. Valid driver's license required or preferred. Massachusetts pesticide applicator license or willingness to obtain one preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This is a physically demanding outdoor position. The employee must be able to: Work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions. Stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, climb, and reach frequently. Lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to approximately 50 pounds. Operate machinery and equipment safely. Work early mornings and extended hours during peak golf season. Perform repetitive physical tasks. Work safely around moving equipment, fertilizers, pesticides, irrigation systems, and other maintenance materials.
WORK SCHEDULE
Golf course maintenance requires flexibility, particularly during the golf season. The Assistant Superintendent must be willing to work: Early morning shifts Weekends Holidays when required Overtime during peak seasons Tournament and special-event schedules Weather-dependent schedules Emergency or storm-related maintenance when necessary
LEADERSHIP EXPECTATIONS
The Assistant Superintendent will serve as a working leader within the Grounds Department and is expected to: Lead by example. Maintain professional relationships with employees and management. Promote teamwork and accountability. Ensure assigned work is completed correctly and efficiently. Provide instruction and training to groundskeeping staff. Monitor employee performance and report concerns to the Superintendent. Ensure all employees follow safety procedures and properly use PPE. Maintain a professional appearance and attitude while representing Norton Country Club.
SAFETY & COMPLIANCE
Safety is a critical responsibility of this position. The Assistant Superintendent must ensure that grounds staff follow all applicable Norton Country Club safety policies, equipment operating procedures, PPE requirements, chemical handling procedures, and applicable federal and Massachusetts regulations. All accidents, injuries, property damage, equipment damage, chemical spills, and unsafe conditions must be reported promptly to management.
