JOB TITLE
A Bar A Ranch Head Groundskeeper
JOB SUMMARY
The A Bar A Ranch is a historic guest ranch located near Encampment, Wyoming. The facility includes guest cabins, staff housing, and infrastructure for approximately 125 guests per week and 125 employees during the summer operating season. There is a 9-hole golf course, lawns and greenspaces, planted beds, trees, gravel pathways, ponds, and other landscaping features that make up the grounds. April through October Responsible for managing and performing the tasks associated with daily and annual maintenance of the golf course, associated grounds, sprinkler irrigation system, and other grounds-related responsibilities. This position will also provide general maintenance support on an as-needed basis during the summer months. November through March Responsible for general maintenance and project support, including snow removal, equipment repair, handyman tasks, vehicle maintenance, summer season preparation, and other tasks in cooperation with the Maintenance Director. Assists Maintenance Director with grounds and maintenance related project planning for summer seasonal staff.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Oversees/supervises seasonal staff members for grounds-related tasks during the summer operating season. Able to train, schedule, and manage a team and appropriately delegate tasks.
  • Oversees operation and maintenance of the sprinkler irrigation system, ensuring pumps are operating, zones are programmed appropriately, heads and infrastructure are in working order, and adequate watering is occurring in all zones. Completes repairs as needed.
  • Oversees, maintains, and operates mowing equipment; including greens, tees, fairways, rough, native grass, lawns.
  • Ensures that weeds and grass are trimmed around buildings, pathways, parking areas, and other areas that require weed control and/or trimming.
  • Performs golf course set up and maintenance; cup cutting, tee cleanup, divot filling, flagging, etc.
  • Oversees/performs debris removal, fertilization, aeration, top dressing, seeding, and other tasks.
  • Oversees installation and maintenance of landscaping plant material and all associated landscaping duties.
  • Maintains and treats golf course ponds.
  • Oversees swimming pool cleaning, maintenance, and chemical treatment; provides training on pool cleaning to seasonal staff members.
  • Cleans, fuels, and stores equipment as appropriate. Maintains oil and other fluids. Reports equipment problems promptly to the Maintenance Director.
  • Possesses an understanding of the importance of safety and sees that safe operation procedures are observed in all daily activities.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to the work and success of the A Bar A and Gates Family Ranches by being service- and solution-oriented, having positive interactions with all staff and guests, and meeting established quality, service and safety expectations.
  • Performs additional assignments per the direction of the Maintenance Director and Ranch Managers.
WORK HOURS AND CONDITIONS
Work hours may include early mornings and evenings on weekdays, weekends and holidays, and will occur during inclement weather. Heavy lifting and physical labor are required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Able to effectively and safely operate heavy equipment, mowers, power tools, utility vehicles, weed trimmers, and hand tools. Experienced with loading, unloading, hauling, and towing equipment and materials with trailers.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow instructions (verbal and written).
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Organizational skills; ability to prioritize and track tasks and projects.
  • Basic computer skills (at least email and Excel proficiency).
  • Proven ability to successfully train and direct workers.
  • Communication skills: proven ability to coordinate and collaborate with team members, leaders, vendors, service providers, and all other contacts in the work setting.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least 3 years of progressive experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, and/or golf course agronomy are required, including complex/large-scale sprinkler system programming and maintenance.
  • A degree or certificate in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or related field is preferred.
  • Ability to obtain a commercial pesticide applicator license.
  • Certified Pool Operator (or ability to obtain certification).
  • Valid driver's license.
GENERAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Physical, mental and emotional stamina to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position; manual dexterity sufficient to safely use equipment and tools; vision sufficient to read printed materials, read small print on documents, Safety Data Sheets, and maps; physical agility to push/pull, squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop and reach overhead; physical mobility sufficient to move about the work environment, including in cramped spaces, physical strength to lift from the floor at least 50 lbs. unassisted; physical stamina sufficient to sit, stand or walk for prolonged periods of time; ability to persevere long periods of exposure to pollen and grass (no severe allergic reactions to dust or pollen); mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions.
COMPENSATION
  • Year-round salary (DOE) and paid vacation. Meals provided during summer operating season.
  • Medical insurance and 401k with company match up to 6%.
  • Start date: as soon as possible.
