O'Donal's Nursery is looking for an experienced, hands-on Assistant Perennials Manager to help lead our Perennials Department. This is a great opportunity for someone who loves plants, enjoys working with people, and is comfortable balancing customer service, merchandising, plant care, inventory, and day-to-day department operations. Working closely with the Perennials Manager, the Assistant Perennials Manager plays an important role in keeping the department running smoothly, maintaining exceptional plant quality and displays, supporting the team, and providing knowledgeable service to our customers. Dependability and consistent attendance are essential to this position.
We are looking for someone who can be counted on to be present, engaged, and ready to step in when needed, particularly during our busy seasonal periods. What You'll Do
Assist the Perennials Manager with the daily leadership and operation of the Perennials Department.
Help train, coach, and support employees in plant identification, care, merchandising, and customer service.
Manage employee scheduling for the Perennials Manager's direct reports when the Manager is absent, helping ensure appropriate department coverage and smooth day-to-day operations.
Maintain exceptional plant quality through proper watering, grooming, deadheading, and IPM practices.
Assist with perennial purchasing, receiving, inventory management, replenishment, and seasonal planning.
Monitor inventory levels and help maintain accurate inventory counts.
Create and maintain attractive, well-organized displays with accurate pricing and signage.
Provide knowledgeable assistance to customers with plant selection, care, and landscape recommendations.
Help coordinate daily work assignments and keep the team focused on department priorities.
Support sales goals through strong merchandising, product knowledge, and attention to inventory movement.
Assist with seasonal transitions, promotions, markdowns, and special projects.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment.
Work cooperatively with other departments throughout the nursery. What We're Looking For
A highly dependable individual with excellent attendance who understands the importance of being present and available to support the department and team.
At least 3 years of experience in a retail nursery, greenhouse, landscape, or horticulture environment.
Strong knowledge of Zone 3-5 perennial plant material, including plant care, pests, diseases, and cultural requirements.
Leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
Ability and willingness to provide leadership and make day-to-day decisions when the Perennials Manager is unavailable.
Experience with inventory management and merchandising.
Strong organizational and communication skills.
Excellent customer service skills and a willingness to work directly with customers.
Ability to prioritize and adjust quickly in a busy, seasonal environment.
Ability to work outdoors in heat, humidity, rain, and changing New England weather conditions.
Ability to consistently lift 20-40 pounds throughout the workday.
Valid driver's license and ability to meet company insurance requirements.
