Nursery Manager

Job Description

We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Nursery Manager to lead our retail and wholesale nursery operations. This is a full-time, year-round position for a motivated professional who blends expert plant knowledge with strong leadership, organizational, and customer service skills. You will oversee our nursery zone, manage inventory procurement, maintain accurate inventory records, and lead a seasonal crew to ensure our perennials, shrubs, and trees remain healthy, well-stocked, and beautifully merchandised. Because we serve both the general public and commercial landscapers, a friendly, service-oriented attitude is essential.
Responsibilities Inventory & Procurement:
Oversee the ordering, receiving, tracking, and accurate inventory counts of all green stock (perennials, shrubs, and trees). Conduct routine inventory audits, investigate discrepancies, and maintain accurate inventory records. Build and maintain strong vendor relationships with growers while making purchasing decisions based on inventory levels, seasonal demand, and sales trends.
Team Leadership:
Supervise, train, and motivate a hardworking seasonal crew of 3-5 staff members. Coordinate daily tasks, scheduling, and priorities while fostering a positive, productive work environment and leading by example.
Plant Care & Maintenance:
Direct and perform daily watering, fertilizing, pruning, and pest/disease management protocols to keep nursery stock healthy and in peak condition.
Customer & Client Relations:
Provide expert advice and recommendations to retail customers and commercial landscapers while delivering outstanding customer service. Operate our computer-based point-of-sale (POS) system and assist customers with purchases as needed.
Nursery Merchandising & Upkeep:
Maintain a clean, organized, safe, and visually appealing nursery. Ensure displays are attractive and well-stocked throughout the season while troubleshooting and maintaining irrigation systems.
Administrative & Inventory Control:
Utilize Microsoft Excel, POS software, and other computer systems to maintain inventory records, analyze inventory and sales information, and support efficient day-to-day nursery operations.
Qualifications Experience:
Minimum of 2-3 years of management or supervisory experience in a nursery, garden center, or commercial landscaping environment.
Horticulture Knowledge:
Strong understanding of plant identification, growth habits, and care requirements for perennials, shrubs, and trees.
Inventory Management:
Experience with purchasing, inventory management, cycle counting, and maintaining accurate inventory records is highly preferred.
Customer Service:
Strong interpersonal and communication skills with experience working directly with the public.
Technology:
Comfortable using modern technology, including point-of-sale (POS) systems, Microsoft Excel, email, and other computer software. Experience using spreadsheets to organize, track, and analyze information is preferred.
Organization:
Excellent organizational, time-management, and problem-solving skills with the ability to prioritize multiple projects during busy seasonal periods while maintaining close attention to detail.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, stand for extended periods, and lift up to 50 lbs.
Machinery:
