Job Description
Parks Manager
Purpose of Position:
This position is responsible for staff supervision, patron supervision, event and program coordination, all maintenance operations, and any other functions assigned by the Director of Recreation and Parks.Essential Job Functions:
- Supervises, assigns and performs mowing operations, ball field and general parksmaintenance; trash and debris removal; snow and ice removal; minor plumbing andelectrical repairs; tree and shrub care and removal; building maintenance and repair,etc.
- Ensures all park structures and facilities, and equipment are properly maintained.
- Applies pesticide and fertilizer chemicals following all required safety standards andrequirements.
- Operates power tools and hand tools such as augers, chain saws, tampers, blowers, hedge trimmers, and weed eaters following all safety instructions for grounds maintenance.
- Operates various equipment during winter weather operations in pre-treatingroadways and plowing snow in a safe manner.
- Assist in the preparation of short and long-term ground maintenance programs.
- Regularly perform vehicle inspections; as needed to include preventive maintenance and care of vehicles.
- Ensures Recreation and Parks activities comply with local, state, and federal laws,regulations, and safety standards.
- Operates motor vehicles to travel to various work sites.
- Ensures clean and sanitary restrooms, common areas, and seating areas, etc. within all parks and facilities.
- Able to work both inside and outside, depending on services provided and may takeplace in uncomfortable conditions such as extreme heat or cold, etc.
- Conducts risk assessments to identify potential hazards and areas of vulnerabilitywithin public operations.
- Performs other duties as assigned Education/Experience/Certifications (minimum qualifications):
- Associate degree, or vocational or technical school degree with five years' experience in park maintenance or similar; or any equivalent combination of education training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge skills and abilities for this job.
- Minimum of five years prior experience in a leadership role.
- Possession of a Maryland State Pesticide Applicator certification in the appropriate categories, or the ability to obtain the certification with one (1) year of hire
- Possession of a Maryland Professional Fertilizer Applicator, or the ability to obtain the certification within one (1) year of hire.
- Ability to operate power tools
- Ability to operate heavy equipment
- Excellent communication and people skills
- Possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Obtain CDL within one (1) year Physical requirements and working environment:
- Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. This position requires- climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motion.
- Must be able to exert over fifty pounds of force occasionally, and or up to thirty pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels with those for heavy work.
- Must be able to endure high heat conditions and sub-freezing temperatures.
- Clear vision and hearing, including the ability to communicate effectively in various environments.
- Comfortable working in both indoor and outdoor settings, exposed to varying weather conditions.
Other:
- May be required to work on religious holidays.
- Regular and predictable attendance is required.
- Must work cooperatively with others.
- When position requires vehicle operation, responsible for the safety, readiness and operation of the vehicle and must abide by Dorchester's safe driving policy.
