This is a hands-on lead position for someone who can be trusted to keep a residential remodeling project moving when the owner is not on site. We are not looking for an entry-level carpenter or general laborer. The right candidate should be an experienced residential remodeler who is comfortable working independently, solving problems in the field, coordinating with subcontractors, communicating professionally with homeowners, and producing high-quality finished work. Our projects primarily consist of kitchens, bathrooms, basements, interior renovations, finish carpentry, cabinetry, doors, windows, flooring, and other residential remodeling work. Responsibilities The Lead Carpenter / Remodeler will be expected to independently perform and oversee work including: Interior and exterior finish carpentry Baseboard, casing, crown molding and other trim installation Interior door installation Bifold and closet door installation Window installation and window trim Cabinet installation Vanity installation Built-ins and miscellaneous millwork Light residential framing Framing walls, soffits, openings and blocking Drywall patching and minor drywall repairs Flooring installation and repairs as required Demolition and jobsite preparation Installation of cabinet and door hardware Punch-list and final-detail work Accurate measuring, layout, cutting and installation Reading plans, drawings and project scopes Identifying material needs before they hold up a project Troubleshooting unexpected conditions found during remodeling Coordinating daily work with plumbers, electricians, HVAC contractors, tile installers and other subcontractors Keeping projects organized, clean and moving forward Protecting customers' homes and finished surfaces Maintaining a clean and professional jobsite Communicating project progress, problems and material needs to the owner Professionally interacting with homeowners Helping maintain AJK Remodeling's quality standards from demolition through final punch list What We Are Looking For We need someone who does not require constant supervision . The ideal candidate can walk onto a remodeling project, review the scope of work, determine what needs to happen next, and get the work completed correctly. You should be comfortable making normal field decisions, solving problems and taking ownership of the work while knowing when an issue needs to be brought to the owner. This position is ideal for an experienced carpenter/remodeler who has previously worked as a Lead Carpenter, Crew Leader, Remodeling Carpenter, Working Foreman or similar residential construction position. Required Experience & Qualifications Minimum 5 years of hands-on residential remodeling/carpentry experience preferred Previous experience leading projects, crews or jobsite operations strongly preferred Strong finish carpentry skills Strong understanding of residential construction and remodeling Ability to install trim, doors, windows, cabinetry and vanities without supervision Ability to perform accurate layout and measurements Ability to complete light framing and general remodeling work Ability to troubleshoot problems and find practical solutions in the field Ability to work independently and stay productive without constant direction Ability to maintain a high standard of workmanship Reliable transportation Valid driver's license Dependable attendance Professional appearance and communication Ability to work safely and maintain an organized jobsite Ability to communicate well with homeowners, subcontractors and other team members Tools Candidate should have their own basic hand tools commonly required for residential carpentry and remodeling. Larger and specialty tools required for company projects will be provided or coordinated by AJK Remodeling. What Success Looks Like in This Position We are looking for someone the owner can confidently put in charge of the day's work and know the project will continue moving forward. A successful Lead Carpenter / Remodeler will: Show up consistently and on time Understand the day's objectives without needing constant direction Produce clean, accurate work Think ahead about materials and upcoming project needs Communicate problems before they become larger problems Keep subcontractors and other workers coordinated when necessary Treat customers and their homes professionally Keep the jobsite clean Take responsibility for the quality of the finished product Be willing to jump between different remodeling tasks as the project requires Compensation $25.00-$40.00 per hour depending on experience, skill level and ability to independently lead residential remodeling projects. Higher compensation within the range is reserved for candidates who demonstrate strong finish carpentry skills, extensive remodeling experience and the ability to independently run jobs. This is a full-time position with consistent residential remodeling work throughout Metro Detroit.
