Position Summary:
The Public Works Laborer performs a variety of manual labor and equipment operation duties to maintain the Village's streets, parks, public buildings, water and wastewater systems, stormwater infrastructure, and other municipal facilities. This position works under the direction of the Street Superintendent, Water/Wastewater Operator, and/or Village Manager and assists in all aspects of Village operations. Because Pleasant Hill is a small municipality, the successful candidate must be willing to perform a wide variety of tasks and respond to emergencies as needed. This is a hands-on position requiring independent decision-making, mechanical aptitude, and a commitment to providing excellent public service. All staff are encouraged to establish positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, neighboring Villages/City like personnel, state/local agencies and associations, city management and staff and the public. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Street Maintenance Repair potholes and assist with asphalt and concrete repairs. Clean and maintain streets, alleys, sidewalks, curbs, and gutters. Install and repair street signs and traffic control devices. Assist with pavement striping and road maintenance projects.
Remove litter and debris from public streets and rights-of-way.
Grounds Maintenance Ground keeping tasks such as removing weeds, trimming trees and plants, pick up debris, mow lawn, water and otherwise maintain landscaped areas professionally on all Village grounds. Plant and successfully maintain flowers, shrubs, and trees. Empty trash receptacles and maintain clean public areas. Maintain benches, picnic tables, and shelters.
Assist with landscaping and beautification projects.
Stormwater Maintenance Clean catch basins, culverts, and storm drains. Remove debris from drainage ditches and waterways.
Assist with erosion control and drainage improvements.
Water and Wastewater Assistance Assist with water main and sewer line repairs. Help install and repair water meters. Flush hydrants and assist with water distribution maintenance. Assist with wastewater collection system maintenance.
Operate pumps and equipment under the supervision of certified operators.
Snow and Ice Removal Operate snowplows, salt spreaders, tractors, and other snow removal equipment as assigned. Shovel snow and clear sidewalks, municipal parking lots, and public buildings.
Respond during nights, weekends, and holidays for winter weather operations.
Equipment Operation Operate dump trucks, tractors, mowers, skid loaders, utility vehicles, chainsaws, and other equipment. Use hand tools, power tools, and small equipment safely. Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of Village vehicles and equipment. Report equipment problems and needed repairs.
Keep equipment clean, safe, and ready for operation.
Building and Facility Maintenance Assist with repairs and maintenance of Village buildings and grounds. Perform painting, carpentry, plumbing, and minor electrical repairs as assigned.
Maintain shop facilities and storage areas.
Community Events Set up and remove tables, chairs, barricades, signs, tents, stages, and equipment for Village events. Install and remove holiday decorations.
Assist with parades, festivals, and other community activities.
General Duties Respond to emergencies involving storms, flooding, fallen trees, or utility failures.
Assist other Village departments as needed. Follow all safety policies and procedures. Perform other duties as assigned by the Street Superintendent or Village Manager. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Valid Ohio driver's license, with the ability to maintain insurability. Ability to safely operate equipment and power tools.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Physical Requirements Frequently lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
Stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and work for extended periods. Work outdoors in heat, cold, rain, snow, and other weather conditions. Operate heavy equipment and hand tools. Work evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs when required. Work Environment Work is performed primarily outdoors and in maintenance facilities. The position involves exposure to traffic, heavy equipment, chemicals, dust, noise, fuels, weather extremes, and other conditions associated with municipal public works operations. Compensation Salary is based on qualifications and experience.
