SENIOR FIRESTOPPING MANAGER
Commercial Construction | Metcon, Inc.
POSITION SUMMARY
Metcon is seeking an experienced Senior Firestopping Manager to lead firestopping and passive fire-protection activities on large, complex commercial construction projects. This position will serve as the project's primary authority for firestopping compliance, providing leadership from initial coordination and installation through inspection and final closeout. The Senior Firestopping Manager will work closely with Project Executives, Superintendents, Project Managers, MEP teams, Quality Control, subcontractors, third-party inspectors, design professionals, manufacturers, and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs). The ideal candidate has extensive commercial construction experience, strong technical knowledge of passive fire protection, and the ability to proactively manage firestopping requirements across multiple trades and project areas.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead and manage the project's overall firestopping and passive fireprotection program. Review drawings, specifications, lifesafety plans, rated assemblies, and project requirements. Review and verify ULlisted systems, tested assemblies, manufacturer requirements, and Engineering Judgments (EJs). Coordinate firestopping requirements with MEP, fire protection, lowvoltage, drywall, structural, curtain wall, and other trade partners. Perform and oversee field inspections of penetrations, firerated walls and floors, shafts, construction joints, headofwall conditions, edgeofslab conditions, and perimeter firecontainment systems. Identify noncompliant or deficient installations and manage corrective actions through completion. Lead firestopping preinstallation meetings, mockups, and firstwork inspections. Coordinate with thirdparty inspectors, testing agencies, design professionals, Owners, and AHJs. Prevent rated assemblies from being concealed before required inspections are completed. Manage firestop deficiency logs, inspection reports, photographs, certifications, and supporting documentation. Coordinate Engineering Judgments for field conditions that do not match an existing tested/listed system. Monitor firestopping subcontractor performance, quality, manpower, and progress. Train and provide technical guidance to project personnel and trade partners. Identify potential compliance, quality, and schedule risks and communicate them to project leadership. Ensure complete firestopping documentation, inspections, certifications, warranties, and deficiency resolution for project closeout.
QUALIFICATIONS
7+ years of commercial construction experience preferred, including significant experience with firestopping, passive fire protection, Quality Control, MEP coordination, or inspections. 3+ years of firestopping/passive fireprotection leadership experience strongly preferred. Experience on large, complex commercial construction projects strongly preferred. Experience on projects valued at $100M+ is highly desirable. Strong knowledge of firerated assemblies and passive fireprotection systems. Working knowledge of IBC, NFPA, ASTM, ULlisted systems, and applicable building codes. Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, lifesafety plans, MEP drawings, and rated assembly details. Experience working with thirdparty firestop inspectors and AHJs. Strong understanding of MEP systems and penetrations through rated assemblies. Strong leadership, communication, organization, and problemsolving skills. Ability to coordinate multiple trades and project areas in a fastpaced construction environment.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE & CERTIFICATIONS
Bachelor's or associate degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Building Science, Fire Protection, or related discipline. Firestopping experience on healthcare, highrise, hospitality, gaming, government/DoD, multifamily/dormitory, education, or missioncritical projects. Manufacturer firestop training or certifications. FCIA, IFC, UL, or other recognized firestop training/certifications. OSHA 30 certification.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
This is a proactive leadership position. The Senior Firestopping Manager will ensure firestop requirements are understood and coordinated before penetrations are made, before firestopping is installed, and before rated assemblies are concealed. Success means reducing deficiencies and rework, maintaining complete documentation, successfully completing third-party and AHJ inspections, protecting the project schedule, and delivering a fully compliant passive fire-protection program at turnover.
