Overview The Town of Hadley is seeking a qualified, motivated, and customer-focused professional to serve as its next Building Commissioner . This is a department head position responsible for administering and enforcing the Massachusetts State Building Code, local zoning bylaws, and related state and local regulations. The Building Commissioner plays a vital role in protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the community by overseeing permitting, inspections, code enforcement, plan review, and departmental operations. Essential Responsibilities Administer and enforce the Massachusetts State Building Code, Accessibility Code, local zoning bylaws, and related regulations. Review building permit applications, construction plans, and development proposals for compliance with applicable codes and regulations. Conduct and oversee inspections of residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal construction projects. Issue permits, certificates of occupancy, enforcement orders, and other required documentation. Supervise Building Department staff and coordinate the work of inspectors. Serve as the Town's Sign Commissioner and enforcement agent for the Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals. Respond to structural emergencies and participate as a member of the Town's emergency management team. Prepare and administer the department budget and maintain required records and reports. Work collaboratively with residents, contractors, developers, design professionals, Town departments, boards, and state agencies. Minimum Qualifications Qualified candidates should possess: A bachelor's degree in a field related to building construction or equivalent construction trade experience. Five to seven (5-7) years of progressively responsible experience in building construction, design, or inspection. Experience supervising staff and administering building code enforcement programs is preferred. Thorough knowledge of the Massachusetts State Building Code, zoning regulations, construction methods, and related laws. Excellent communication, customer service, organizational, and problem-solving skills. A valid Massachusetts Driver's License.
Certifications Applicants must:
Possess, at minimum, a Massachusetts Local Inspector certification. Be certified as, or able to obtain certification as, an Inspector of Buildings/Building Commissioner within one year of employment. Maintain all required continuing education credits and professional certifications. Salary and Benefits Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience .
