System Electrician

Job Description

Location:
Morehead City, NC (on-site)
Employment Type:
Full-time Reports To:
Head of Production / Engineering About Virtus Maritime Virtus Maritime is a North Carolina-based autonomous marine technology company building low-cost, highly deployable unmanned surface vessels (USVs) for defense and commercial customers. Our flagship VM18 platform is engineered for contested maritime environments and rapid, expeditionary deployment. We are a small, fast-moving team that combines Eastern NC's world-class boat-building trades with modern autonomy and robotics. The Role We are hiring a Systems Electrician to own the electrical build-out of our USVs — from full-vessel wiring harnesses down to the fine-pitch work inside our autonomy and control enclosures. You will work directly with our engineering and production teams to turn schematics into mission-ready hardware. This is a hands-on role for someone who takes pride in clean, methodical, reliable work. Every wire you land goes on a vessel that has to perform in a demanding maritime environment, often far from support. Attention to detail is non-negotiable. What You'll Do Wire complete USV platforms end-to-end: power distribution, propulsion, sensors, comms, navigation, and payload systems. Build, terminate, and test the internal wiring of autonomy and control boxes, including small-gauge signal wiring, connectors, and PCB-adjacent harnessing. Fabricate wiring harnesses from schematics, wiring diagrams, and interconnect drawings. Perform continuity, insulation, and functional checkout of completed assemblies. Troubleshoot electrical issues at the bench and dockside, and support sea trials as needed. Contribute to process documentation, work instructions, and improvements to build quality. Partner with mechanical, electrical, and autonomy engineers to refine designs for manufacturability. What We're Looking For Required 3+ years of hands-on electrical assembly, wiring, or systems electrician experience. Strong ability to read and work from wiring diagrams, schematics, and interconnect drawings. Proficiency with crimping, soldering (including small-gauge and connector-level work), heat shrink, and proper harness dressing. Comfort with multimeters, continuity testers, and standard bench diagnostic tools. Meticulous attention to detail and a habit of building to spec the first time. Willingness to work on-site in Morehead City, NC. Strongly Preferred Experience wiring military aircraft, military vehicles, or other defense equipment. Familiarity with IPC/WHMA-A-620 or MIL-spec wiring standards. Experience with circular connectors (Deutsch, MIL-DTL-38999, NMEA, TE, etc.) and shielded/twisted-pair cabling. Marine electrical experience (ABYC familiarity, 12/24V DC systems, corrosion-aware practices). Nice to Have Prior US military service (any branch) — especially aviation electrician, avionics, or electronics-technician ratings/MOS. Experience supporting prototype or low-rate initial production hardware. Comfort working in a startup environment where roles flex and priorities evolve.
