About Reesman's Since 1970, Reesman's Excavating & Grading has been a strategic and operational partner for land development across southeastern Wisconsin. From mass grading and utilities to commercial, industrial, and residential site development, we build sites that communities grow on; safely, efficiently, and with an eye on doing it right. We bid public grading and utility projects right alongside our private site development work, and fifty-plus years in, we're still a company of people with a real passion for building. The Role We're looking for a Senior Estimator-Heavy Civil to lead our most complex, high-value, and higher-risk bids: from the first look at the plans, through bid day, to a clean handoff to the field on awarded work. You'll help shape bid strategy, review the work of other estimators, and be the go-to technical resource on the team reporting to our Director of Estimating. What You'll Do Own the estimate Lead complete estimates for complex heavy civil projects: earthwork, grading, utilities, and site development; from document review through bid submission. Dig into plans, specs, geotechnical reports, addenda, and contracts to define scope and catch gaps early. Build and validate takeoffs in Agtek and Bluebeam, and detailed cost-based estimates in HCSS HeavyBid (labor, equipment, materials, subs, production rates, escalation, and contingency). Prepare preliminary schedules and working-day estimates while managing multiple bids at once. Shape the bid strategy Lead site visits and factor access, phasing, soils, groundwater, environmental, and constructability conditions into the number. Identify and document risks, opportunities, exclusions, clarifications, and bid qualifications. Develop value-engineering alternatives and concept budgets, and recommend pricing approach, risk allowances, and bid/no-bid calls. Present cost drivers, assumptions, and margin risks in bid reviews with leadership. Work the market Put together bid packages and solicit subcontractor and supplier pricing that fully covers the scope. Level and vet quotes for completeness, commercial terms, schedule fit, and scope gaps. Build strong relationships with subs, suppliers, owners, and industry partners, and keep a pulse on market conditions. Raise the team's game Review takeoffs, quotes, and HeavyBid estimates from other estimators, and coach and mentor them along the way. Help build better checklists, historical cost data, bid procedures, quality-control reviews, and estimating KPIs. Hand off awarded work clearly to Project Management and Operations, and partner with the field to validate crews, production rates, and means and methods. Compare job closeouts against the estimate and turn lessons learned into sharper numbers next time. What Success Looks Like Bids are done, reviewed, and submitted on time; every time. Estimates are accurate, with scope, assumptions, exclusions, and risks clearly documented. Scope gaps and constructability issues get caught before submission, not after award. The estimating team gets stronger because you're on it. Who Thrives Here Our industry doesn't pay for second place, so all of our work is "play to win" work. The people who love it here tend to be: Driven and self-motivated. You bring your own gas. Excellent at time management. Multiple bids, hard deadlines, no drama. Strong communicators. You can talk to a field foreman and a civil engineer in the same afternoon. Adaptable and resilient. Priorities shift; you re-task and keep moving. Natural mentors. You lead through influence, not a title. What You Bring 10+ years of progressive heavy civil construction estimating or closely related construction experience, including ownership of complete estimates. 5+ years estimating civil, site development, earthwork, utility, or comparable heavy construction projects. Advanced proficiency with HCSS HeavyBid, Agtek Earthwork, and Bluebeam, plus Microsoft Office. A track record of leading complex bids, assessing risk, validating production assumptions, and presenting recommendations to management. A valid driver's license and the ability to travel locally to project sites and meetings (about 10%). Authorization to work in the United States. Nice to have Bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a related field or an equivalent mix of education and field experience. 7+ years of civil, earthwork, site development, grading, or utility estimating. Experience mentoring estimators, improving estimating standards, and leading bid reviews. Strong knowledge of the southeastern Wisconsin market. Work Environment This is primarily an on-site office role to our office in Burlington, WI with regular local site visits . Site visits can mean walking uneven terrain and slopes, working outdoors in all kinds of Wisconsin weather, and occasionally lifting up to 25 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation. Ready to Bid on This One? If you read "play to win" and felt right at home, we want to hear from you. Apply with your resume, and tell us about a complex bid you're proud of. Reesman's Excavating & Grading is an equal opportunity employer.
