The Shipfitter will be responsible for assembling, fitting, and welding metal components according to detailed blueprints and technical drawings. This role plays a vital part in constructing high-quality ship structures, ensuring all work adheres to safety standards and industry regulations. The ideal candidate will possess strong mechanical knowledge, proficiency with various welding techniques, and experience interpreting technical documentation. Responsibilities Read and interpret mechanical blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications to accurately assemble ship components. Measure, cut, shape, and fit sheet metal and metal materials using hand tools, power tools, and machining equipment. Perform welding operations including MIG (GMAW), TIG (GTAW), FCAW, and SMAW (stick welding) to join metal parts in accordance with AWS standards. Use precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and measuring tapes to ensure accurate fabrication. Assemble structural components using appropriate techniques while maintaining strict adherence to safety protocols. Operate fabrication shop equipment including press brakes, plasma cutters, and other machinery for metal shaping. Conduct quality checks on fabricated parts using shop math and blueprint interpretation to meet project specifications. Maintain a clean and safe work environment by following all safety procedures related to handling metal materials, welding fumes, and power tools. Collaborate with team members on assembly processes, troubleshooting issues promptly to maintain project timelines. Support the interpretation of technical drawings aligned with ASME codes & standards for shipbuilding. Experience Proven experience working on construction sites or in fabrication shops specializing in metal or shipbuilding projects. Demonstrated proficiency with welding techniques including MIG, TIG, FCAW, SMAW, and gas metal arc welding. Strong mechanical knowledge with the ability to interpret blueprints and technical drawings accurately. Familiarity with shop math, machining processes, ductwork fabrication, soldering, plasma cutting, press brake operation, and assembly procedures. Knowledge of safety protocols specific to construction sites and fabrication environments. Experience working with various measuring instruments such as calipers and micrometers. Ability to utilize hand tools and power tools efficiently while maintaining safety standards. Prior experience adhering to AWS standards and ASME codes & standards is highly desirable. Mechanical fabrication background with a focus on sheet metal fabrication and structural assembly.
