Hardwood Lumber Inspector / Grader

Job Description

Hardwood Lumber Inspector/Grader - We're hiring an experienced Lumber Inspector/Grader to inspect and grade hardwood lumber according to NHLA rules. Position Description The Lumber Inspector/Grader is responsible for visually inspecting and grading hardwood lumber (green or kiln-dried) according to NHLA grading rules. This role ensures lumber is accurately sorted, stacked, tallied, and moved through production efficiently, and may include oversight of sorting/stacking crews prior to shipment.
Key Responsibilities:
Visually inspect, measure, and grade hardwood lumber to NHLA standards Identify defects such as knots, splits, wane, checking, stain, and other quality-impacting characteristics Determine proper grade, thickness, and species classification Manually and accurately mark grade/trim designations on each board Maintain accuracy while keeping pace with production rates Oversee accurate sorting and stacking of loads prior to customer shipment Maintain handheld lumber tally system and accurate documentation for inventory/shipments Provide accurate grading reports for each load to the office for processing Provide weekly production reports to the office each Monday Communicate quality concerns or recurring issues to production supervisors Perform all duties with safety as top priority
Requirements:
Experience with NHLA lumber inspection — NHLA Inspector certification strongly preferred Must be an NHLA school graduate OR have 5+ years of prior experience grading hardwood lumber according to NHLA rules Strong knowledge of hardwood species (e.g., red oak, hard/soft maple, ash, hickory, cherry, basswood, etc.) Ability to consistently apply NHLA rules in a fast-paced production environment Strong math skills with basic computer knowledge Strong attention to detail and ability to make quick, accurate decisions Ability to lift 30-50 lbs and stand for extended periods Reliable, punctual, safety-oriented, strong work ethic
Pay:
Competitive, based on experience — experienced NHLA graders welcome Expected hours: 40.0 per week
