Construction Equipment Operator Job Description, Duties & Qualifications Position Summary The Construction Equipment Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating heavy and light construction equipment to support excavation, grading, site preparation, material handling, demolition, utility, roadwork, and general construction activities. The operator works closely with supervisors, laborers, survey personnel, and other trades to complete projects safely, accurately, and productively. Typical Job Duties Operate assigned construction equipment including excavators, skid steers, compact track loaders, wheel loaders, backhoes, bulldozers, graders, rollers, trenchers, forklifts, and other job-specific machinery. Perform excavation, trenching, backfilling, grading, leveling, loading, spreading, compaction, material handling, and site preparation activities. Read and follow site plans, grade stakes, elevations, layouts, and verbal instructions to complete work within required tolerances. Inspect equipment before each shift and report mechanical problems, safety hazards, fluid leaks, damage, or unusual operating conditions. Perform routine operator maintenance such as checking fluids, greasing equipment, cleaning machines, inspecting attachments, and completing required daily inspection records. Select, install, and safely use appropriate buckets, blades, forks, augers, compactors, grapples, breakers, or other attachments. Coordinate equipment movements with ground personnel and maintain awareness of workers, utilities, vehicles, structures, overhead hazards, and changing site conditions. Load, unload, position, and secure equipment for transportation when authorized and properly trained. Maintain safe and organized work areas and assist with general construction or labor tasks when equipment operation is not required. Follow company policies, project specifications, manufacturer instructions, OSHA requirements, and applicable federal, state, and local safety regulations. Communicate progress, production issues, equipment concerns, and job-site hazards promptly to the supervisor or foreman. Equipment & Work Activities Work Area Typical Equipment / Activities Earthmoving Excavators, backhoes, bulldozers, loaders; excavation, trenching, backfilling Grading Motor graders, dozers, skid steers; fine grading, leveling, slopes and drainage Material Handling Wheel loaders, skid steers, forklifts; loading, hauling, placing and stockpiling materials Site Preparation Compact loaders, rollers, compactors; clearing, subgrade preparation and compaction Road / Utility Work Trenchers, excavators, loaders, rollers; utility trenches, aggregate placement and roadway preparation Minimum Qualifications Prior experience operating construction, excavation, agricultural, utility, landscaping, or similar heavy equipment is preferred. Ability to safely operate assigned equipment and understand basic controls, limitations, operating procedures, and job-site hazards. Ability to perform pre-operation inspections and recognize common mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, tire/track, and attachment concerns. Ability to follow plans, grade information, written instructions, and verbal directions. Ability to work effectively around moving equipment, ground crews, utilities, traffic, and other construction hazards. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physically demanding work when required. Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with supervisors, coworkers, subcontractors, and other site personnel. Valid driver's license may be required. Additional licensing, endorsements, or certifications may be required for particular equipment or projects. Preferred Qualifications Two or more years of construction equipment operation experience. Demonstrated experience operating excavators, skid steers, loaders, dozers, graders, backhoes, or similar equipment. Experience working from grade stakes, laser levels, GPS machine-control systems, site plans, or construction drawings. OSHA or other recognized construction safety training. Equipment-specific operator training or certification. Basic knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, undercarriage systems, attachments, and routine equipment maintenance. Experience working around underground utilities, traffic-control areas, trenches, slopes, and confined or restricted work zones. Work may involve exposure to heat, cold, rain, dust, mud, noise, vibration, uneven terrain, and heavy machinery. The operator must be able to safely enter and exit equipment, remain alert while operating machinery, use hand and foot controls, climb steps or ladders, and perform lifting, carrying, bending, walking, or other manual tasks as required by the job. Safety Expectations Safety is an essential responsibility of the position. Operators are expected to complete pre-shift inspections, wear required personal protective equipment, use seat belts and other equipment safety systems, maintain safe clearances, follow spotter and signaling procedures, protect workers and the public, and stop work when an unsafe condition exists. Accidents, near misses, equipment defects, utility strikes, and other hazards must be reported immediately according to company procedures.
