Construction Equipment Operator

Job Description

Equipment Operator Position Summary The Equipment Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating heavy construction equipment to support concrete, site preparation, excavation, grading, demolition, and other construction activities. The operator is expected to perform work accurately and productively while maintaining a strong focus on safety, equipment care, quality, and teamwork. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Safely operate heavy construction equipment, including but not limited to skid steers, skid loaders, wheel loaders, excavators, dozers, laser screed, concrete paving machine, rollers, and other assigned equipment. Perform excavation, grading, loading, backfilling, trenching, material handling, site preparation, and other construction-related activities. Operate equipment according to project plans, specifications, grades, elevations, and job-site requirements. Assist with concrete construction activities, including site preparation, subgrade preparation, aggregate placement, and material handling. Perform daily equipment inspections before operating machinery. Identify and report mechanical problems, damage, safety concerns, or maintenance needs to the appropriate supervisor. Maintain equipment in a clean and safe operating condition. Perform basic equipment maintenance such as greasing, checking fluids, cleaning, and other routine maintenance as assigned. Follow all company safety policies, OSHA requirements, project specifications, and job-site procedures. Maintain proper awareness of workers, vehicles, utilities, structures, and other hazards while operating equipment. Communicate effectively with foremen, laborers, concrete crews, truck drivers, and other equipment operators. Follow directions from supervisors and adjust work activities based on changing job-site conditions. Assist laborers and other crew members with general construction duties when equipment operation is not required. Load, unload, move, and place construction materials as directed. Maintain accurate awareness of grades, slopes, elevations, and site layout. Help maintain a clean, organized, and safe job site. Properly secure equipment and attachments when not in use. Operate equipment efficiently to minimize unnecessary fuel consumption, wear, and downtime. Perform other duties as assigned by management or the project foreman. Qualifications Previous experience operating heavy construction equipment preferred. Experience in concrete construction, excavation, grading, or site development preferred. Ability to safely operate multiple types of construction equipment. Ability to read and understand basic construction plans, grades, elevations, and instructions preferred. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and overtime when required by the project schedule. Valid driver's license preferred. CDL is a plus but not required unless required for specific job duties. Must be dependable, punctual, safety-conscious, and willing to work as part of a team. Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions. Physical Requirements Ability to sit and operate equipment for extended periods. Ability to climb into and out of heavy equipment. Ability to walk, stand, bend, stoop, kneel, and work on uneven terrain. Ability to lift and carry materials or tools as required. Ability to work around dust, noise, vibration, concrete materials, dirt, and other construction-related conditions. Ability to perform physical work when equipment operation is not required. Safety Responsibilities Safety is a primary responsibility of this position. The Equipment Operator is expected to: Follow all company and project-specific safety policies. Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE). Conduct required equipment inspections. Maintain awareness of employees and other personnel working around equipment. Never operate equipment in an unsafe manner. Immediately report accidents, near misses, property damage, injuries, and unsafe conditions. Follow proper procedures for equipment shutdown, parking, fueling, and securing equipment. Performance Expectations The Equipment Operator is expected to perform assigned work safely, efficiently, and accurately while maintaining equipment properly and supporting the overall productivity of the crew. The employee should demonstrate good judgment, reliability, attention to detail, teamwork, and a professional attitude.
