Job Overview - Ice Rink Ice-Making Support Technician The Ice-Making Support Technician assists with the preparation, construction, and maintenance of ice skating surfaces by applying water in controlled layers to create a smooth, durable sheet of ice. This role supports rink operations by ensuring the ice meets quality and safety standards for recreational skating, hockey, figure skating, and special events.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist with the initial flooding and layering process to build a new ice surface. Apply water evenly using hoses, spray systems, or specialized ice-making equipment. Monitor water distribution, freezing conditions, and ice thickness throughout the freezing process. Help maintain a smooth, level skating surface by repairing cracks, holes, and surface imperfections. Operate and assist with ice resurfacing equipment as needed. Monitor refrigeration systems and environmental conditions that affect ice quality. Follow safety procedures while working around cold environments, water, and mechanical equipment. Assist with setting up and removing rink equipment, including hockey boards, nets, and protective padding. Maintain cleanliness of work areas and ensure equipment is properly stored and maintained. Work collaboratively with facility staff to prepare the rink for scheduled events and public use.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Experience with ice rink maintenance or facility operations is an asset but not required. Ability to work in cold environments for extended periods. Physically capable of lifting up to 50 pounds and standing, walking, bending, and operating equipment for extended periods. Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high-quality ice conditions. Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and early mornings.
Preferred Skills:
Basic mechanical aptitude. Experience operating ice resurfacing equipment (e.g., Zamboni) is an asset. Good communication and teamwork skills. Ability to identify and resolve minor ice surface issues efficiently. This position plays an important role in creating and maintaining a safe, high-quality skating surface for all rink users while supporting the overall operation of the facility.
