The Crane Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of mobile and yard cranes used in the handling, loading, and movement of structural steel and housing steel components at Ritner Steel's fabrication facility. This role plays a critical part in supporting shop production, material staging, and outbound shipping operations. The Crane Operator must possess the technical skill to handle large and heavy steel members with precision while maintaining an unwavering commitment to safety and compliance with all applicable regulations Duties Crane Operation Operate mobile cranes and/or yard cranes to lift, move, and position structural steel and housing steel components throughout the facility and yard. Work in close coordination with fabrication, shipping, and yard personnel to safely execute lifts in support of production and delivery schedules. Perform lifts of varying complexity including tandem lifts, heavy picks, and precision placements as directed by the supervisor. Follow all written lift plans, rigging procedures, and safety protocols for each lift performed. Communicate clearly with riggers, signal persons, and ground crews using standard hand signals. Rigging & Load Handling Inspect, select, and properly attach rigging equipment including slings, shackles, hooks, and spreader bars appropriate for each load. Calculate and verify load weights and center of gravity prior to each lift to ensure safe rigging configurations. Inspect all rigging hardware before use and remove from service any equipment that is damaged, worn, or out of compliance. Assist with the proper staging and sequencing of steel members for fabrication and shipping operations. Equipment Inspection & Maintenance Conduct pre-shift and post-shift inspections of all crane equipment in accordance with OSHA and manufacturer requirements; document findings and report deficiencies immediately. Perform basic operator-level maintenance including lubrication, cleaning, and minor adjustments as required. Report mechanical issues or safety concerns to the Logistics Supervisor promptly and refrain from operating unsafe equipment. Safety & Compliance Adhere to all OSHA standards, company safety policies, and industry best practices governing crane operation and rigging. Maintain current certifications and complete all required safety training as directed by management. Participate in pre-lift meetings, toolbox talks, and safety inspections as required. Immediately report all near-misses, incidents, and unsafe conditions to the supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required 3+ years of experience operating mobile or yard cranes in a manufacturing, fabrication, or heavy industrial environment. Valid NCCCO certification (mobile crane) or equivalent recognized crane operator certification. Demonstrated knowledge of rigging principles, load calculations, and safe lift planning. Familiarity with
OSHA 1926
Subpart CC (mobile cranes) regulations. Ability to work in outdoor conditions in all weather. Preferred Experience handling structural steel members and housing steel components in a jobsite environment. Experience with tandem lifts and engineered lift plans. OSHA 30-Hour General Industry or Construction certification. Rigger Level I or Level II certification.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed primarily outdoors operating mobile cranes on active job sites and within the fabrication yard; requires constant situational awareness around heavy equipment, steel members, rigging operations, and other trades working in close proximity. Frequent physical activity including climbing, bending, and lifting of rigging equipment. Shift work and occasional overtime may be required to meet production and shipping demands.

Pay:
$22.00 - $30.00 per hour
