Job Description

ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW
Through advocacy and mentorship, San Francisco CASA empowers community members to stand up for a foster child and champion their rights in court and the community. SFCASA recruits, trains, and provides ongoing support to community volunteers serving as Court Appointed Special Advocates to advocate for the best interests of youth in the foster care and juvenile justice systems. Through sustained, relationship- and strength-based support during and after systems involvement, SFCASA creates positive changes in children's lives, providing them with hope, stability, and opportunities to thrive in preparation for healthy, productive adult lives. POSITION OVERVIEW
As part of SFCASA's partnership with the San Francisco Department of Children, Youth & Their Families (DCYF), the YOUth Empowerment Board (YEB) is a paid leadership program for system-impacted youth ages 18-24 to lead youth-centered grantmaking, build community partnerships, advocate for transition-aged youth (TAY), and develop professional and leadership skills. We are seeking system-impacted young adults to serve as YOUth Empowerment Board Members for the 2026-2027 term. Board members will work closely with SFCASA's YOUth Empowerment Coach and returning YEB youth leaders to review and make funding decisions, build partnerships, participate in community outreach, and expand resources and opportunities for their peers. YEB members will participate in both the Peer-to-Peer Grant Program and YEB's organizational RFP process, including application review, discussion, scoring, and collective funding decisions. Members will also participate in a YEB committee, providing opportunities to develop specialized skills and learn directly from returning youth leaders.
JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
YOUth Empowerment Board:
  • Attend weekly YEB meetings and complete assigned remote work for a total of 8 hours per week.
  • Attend a weekly Empowerment Hour (1 hour per week with supervisor via Zoom).
  • Engage in leadership, advocacy, mentorship, and professional development opportunities.
  • Review, score, discuss, and vote on monthly Peer-to-Peer Grant applications.
  • Participate in the YEB RFP application, review, and funding decision process for youth-serving organizations.
  • Participate in an assigned YEB committee and contribute to committee projects and responsibilities.
  • Build partnerships with TAY-serving community-based organizations.
  • Support community outreach, communications, presentations, and YEB events.
  • Participate in workshops and learning opportunities based on the needs and interests of transition-aged youth.
  • Share ideas, lived expertise, and feedback to help strengthen YEB and SFCASA's work with system-impacted youth.
  • Participate in collaborative decision-making and contribute equally to board-wide grantmaking votes.
YEB COMMITTEE STRUCTURE
Each YEB Member will participate in one of YEB's three committees:
  • Operations
  • Finance & Grantmaking
  • Communications & Community Engagement Committees provide members with opportunities to develop specialized professional skills, take ownership of projects, and learn from returning YEB leaders.
All YEB members maintain an equal voice in board-wide discussions and grantmaking decisions , regardless of committee or leadership role.
WORK SCHEDULE
This is a hybrid position working 8 hours per week. Tuesday — In Person | 2:00-5:00 PM Weekly YEB meetings, grantmaking, committee work, workshops, and program activities. Wednesday — In Person | 2:00-5:00 PM YEB projects, professional development, committee work, community engagement, and program activities. Thursday — Remote | 2 hours Remote YEB work, including a scheduled individual Empowerment Hour/1:1 with the Youth Empowerment Coach and independent or committee work. Some scheduling adjustments may occur based on holidays, community events, presentations, or other YEB activities.
Additional Job Responsibilities:
  • Establish and maintain effective, collegial working relationships with SFCASA staff, board, and volunteers, as well as with representatives of housing, healthcare, parenting, employment and education service providers, and other community-based organizations that serve former foster, probation youth, and child welfare involved families.
  • Participate as an active team member and support organizational events, as needed, including at swearing-in ceremonies, Advocate Appreciation, the Youth Holiday Party, and the Fostering Change Gala.
  • Other related job duties, as assigned. Non-essential job duties, non-related responsibilities, and other tasks may be assigned from time to time, as required by the Organization.
  • SFCASA is a small non-profit organization requiring flexibility from its staff.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
  • We welcome applications from system-impacted young adults ages 18-24, including those with foster care or juvenile justice involvement.
  • Current and former San Francisco foster youth and/or probation youth.
  • Little to no prior work experience required.
  • We value diverse backgrounds and/or experiences.
  • Training and support will be provided.
  • A desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of system-involved youth.
  • Highly organized, with attention to detail, and the ability to manage a fast-paced, multi-faceted program.
  • Familiarity with community-based organizations that serve San Francisco's TAY youth, ages 18 to 24.
  • Proficient in various programs such as Google Docs, Salesforce, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise diplomacy and discretion in communication with others.
  • Spanish-English bilingual candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Flexibility with work hours including some evening and weekend availability.
  • Demonstrate respect for all people regardless of socioeconomic background, culture, religion, sexual orientation, disability, or gender and experience working with culturally diverse populations.
  • Ability to occasionally lift, carry, push, and pull up to 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position at least 50% of the time.
  • Capability of occasionally moving about an office setting to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Ability to proficiently and frequently operate a computer and keyboard as well as other office equipment such as calculators, copy machines, printers, etc.
  • Consistently practice safe working habits while using office supplies, equipment, and electronics as well as the ability to maintain a safe and hazard-free workstation for oneself and others around them.
PAY & BENEFITS
  • The rate of pay for this part-time position is $24.00 per hour (8 hours per week).
  • This temporary work assignment begins October 2026 and ends June 30, 2027.
