Job Description

Company Description Jayhawk Marina is a full-service marina on Hillsdale Lake, less than an hour from the Kansas City metro. We offer covered wet slips, dry storage, fuel, a well-stocked convenience store, a boat and floating cabin rental fleet, a year-round enclosed fishing dock, and on-site boat detailing. We are committed to excellence and passionate about giving every slipholder and day visitor a safe, welcoming, and well-run place to enjoy the water. Job Summary The Marina Manager / Dockmaster is the hands-on leader of daily waterfront operations. Working closely with the General Manager, this role directs the dock team, manages slip assignments and vessel movement, supervises the fuel dock and rental fleet turnarounds, keeps docks and equipment safe and well maintained, and sets the tone for how customers are greeted and cared for on the water. Key Responsibilities Direct daily dock operations, including slip assignments, vessel placement, arrivals and departures, and courtesy dock and boat ramp traffic during peak periods. Assist boaters with docking, line handling, and safe maneuvering, and monitor dock and swim area conduct to keep the waterfront orderly and safe. Supervise fuel dock activity, including safe fueling procedures, pump operation and readings, fuel inventory reconciliation, delivery receiving, and spill prevention and response. Manage rental fleet turnarounds, including boat and floating cabin check-out and check-in, fuel and cleaning between rentals, damage inspection and documentation, and renter safety orientation. Schedule, train, and supervise dockhands and seasonal waterfront staff, setting daily assignments and holding the team to service and safety standards. Perform and document routine inspections of docks, walkways, gangways, pilings and anchoring systems, cleats, electrical pedestals, water lines, ladders, and safety equipment; complete or coordinate repairs. Maintain dock equipment and small fleet assets, including work boats, carts, lifts, pumps, and pumpout equipment, keeping preventive maintenance current. Adjust dock and vessel configurations for lake level changes, seasonal opening and closing, and severe weather; lead storm preparation and post-storm inspection. Serve as first responder on the water for incidents, breakdowns, and emergencies; complete incident reports and escalate to the General Manager. Enforce environmental and safety requirements, including fuel handling, waste and pumpout procedures, shoreline and permit conditions, and required signage and equipment. Support slipholder relationships by handling day-to-day requests, resolving dock-level issues, and communicating clearly about closures, moves, and maintenance work. Keep accurate records of slip occupancy, vessel information, fuel and rental activity, and work completed, using the marina's management and reservation systems. Provide coverage and support for the store and office during busy periods, and assist the General Manager with seasonal projects and vendor work on the docks. Report on occupancy, dock conditions, safety concerns, staffing needs, and capital repair items to the General Manager. Qualifications Two or more years of marina, boatyard, waterfront, or comparable operations experience, with at least one year in a supervisory or lead role preferred. Strong boat handling skills and comfort operating and docking a range of vessels, including pontoons and work boats. Working knowledge of dock systems, marine hardware, fuel handling, and waterfront safety practices. Ability to lead a seasonal team, set daily priorities, and stay organized during high-volume weekends and holidays. Excellent customer service and communication skills, with the composure to handle busy docks and difficult situations calmly. Comfort with marina management, reservation, and point-of-sale systems, and with basic reporting and recordkeeping. High school diploma or equivalent required; additional training in marina operations, marine trades, or hospitality is a plus. Valid driver's license; boating safety certification, CPR and first aid, and fuel handling training preferred or obtained after hire. Availability to work weekends, holidays, and extended hours throughout the boating season. Physical Requirements Work outdoors in variable weather, including heat, wind, and rain. Move safely on floating docks, ramps, and vessels; board and exit boats repeatedly throughout the day. Lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and handle lines, fenders, and dock hardware. Stand, walk, kneel, and reach for extended periods.
