Job Description

Transfer Center Specialist - Medical Administration Dispatch Palo Alto, CA - Onsite You are a Medical Communication Specialist who will coordinate emergent, urgent, and elective patient transfers and transports into and out of the Hospital. This role serves as a critical communication link among referring facilities, physicians, nurses, transport teams, pilots, and hospital departments while coordinating patient placement, acuity, transportation, documentation, and dispatch. The Specialist also operates advanced communication, mapping, weather, and database systems and supports staff training and operational procedures.
This position pays:
$45 to $50 per hour What you will be doing: Conduct telephone intake and coordinate patient transfer requests from hospitals, clinics, and healthcare facilities. Establish teleconferences among referring physicians, receiving physicians, nurses, transport teams, and appropriate hospital staff. Coordinate patient placement, receiving services, transport mode, and dispatch based on patient acuity. Operate multi-line telephones, two-way radio systems, databases, mapping systems, and emergency medical dispatch equipment. Dispatch Life Flight and ground medical transport and monitor transport missions, flight-following systems, weather, radar, and satellite information. Serve as the primary communication liaison among transport crews, medical teams, referring facilities, pilots, and physicians. Review and communicate patient clinical information, medical status, acuity, and care requirements to receiving teams. Maintain accurate records, referral databases, electronic medical records, transfer documentation, and reports. Ensure compliance with EMTALA requirements and established transfer and transport procedures. Coordinate with Patient Placement, physicians, Social Work, Case Management, and external agencies as needed. Support staff training, development presentations, committees, and operational procedures.
What you bring:
High school diploma or GED required. At least 2 years of progressively responsible, directly related experience. Knowledge of medical terminology and EMTALA regulations. Advanced understanding of radio communications and emergency medical dispatch procedures. Ability to accurately communicate patient medical status and care information to clinical teams. Strong judgment, composure, and prioritization skills in high-pressure, fast-paced environments. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to manage multiple complex tasks while meeting time-sensitive deadlines. Knowledge of Medi-Cal, Medicare, CCS, third-party payer, and private insurance requirements preferred.
