Job Description

Part-time CCATS Dispatcher The Job Carteret County Government is seeking a Part-time Dispatcher to join the CCATS team. If you have experience in transit dispatch, our Part-time Dispatcher job may be the role for you! The Location Office location is at the General Services office in Morehead City, NC. The Details $16.50 per hour & 30 hours or less per week. Must contribute 6% of earning to the retirement system (LGERS) & is eligible for retirement benefits, but no other benefits. Must be able to work a flexible schedule and be available Monday through Friday 6:00AM to 6:00PM. Posting expires 8/4/2026.

//carteretcountync.gov & click on the Employment link. The Job Description General Statement of Duties Performs intermediate, semi-skilled clerical and dispatching work. Employee may be called upon in case of disaster, either natural or man-made. This service, if required, will take precedence over duties described in this position as directed by the Transportation Operations Manager. Distinguishing Features of the Class An employee in this class performs a variety of duties related to the delivery of public and human service transportation services. Such duties involve the use of a calculator, personal computer, main frame computer terminal, printer, fax machine, telephone, and voice radio communication equipment. Decisions involve selecting correct funding source for passengers, assignment of passengers to appropriate routes and assignment of appropriate vehicles to routes. The employee must exercise independent judgment and initiative in performing a variety of duties. Considerable tact and firmness are required in meeting the general public and obtaining all necessary information from persons requesting services. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Transportation Operations Manager and is evaluated through observation of work and periodic conferences. Duties and Responsibilities Essential Duties and Tasks Receives transportation requests by phone.

Schedules passengers to appropriate vehicles.

Composes fixed route schedules and assigns Bus Operators to specific routes.

Communicates information to drivers by two-way radio.

Documents information from drivers on dispatcher log.

Enters passenger and vehicle information into the computer as needed.

Prepares a variety of reports.

Notifies agencies of delays or changes in route schedules.

Communicates vehicle maintenance problems to fleet maintenance.

Produces daily and weekly driver manifest using the automated system.

Provides technical and clerical support such as answering telephone, filing, faxing and maintaining automated dispatch system. Recruitment and Selection Guidelines Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Working knowledge of the geographical layout of Carteret County as to the location of streets, roads, important building and other landmarks. Physical Requirements Work requires the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasionally exertion of up to 25. Pounds of force. Work requires sitting for long period of time.

Work requires reaching, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions.

Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.

Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.

Visual acuity is required for close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.

Worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, and atmospheric conditions.

Work is generally performed in a loud noisy environment (e.g. heavy traffic, large earth-moving equipment. Ability to maintain confidentiality of passengers (ie: medical information). Ability to work under stress while keeping pleasant attitude.

Ability to operate a personal computer and use Microsoft Office.

Ability to receive and fill transportation requests in an orderly and cost-effective manner with minimal assistance.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to maintain computerized records and data bases in an orderly fashion and to compile data from such records for the generation of reports.

Ability to type accurately.

Ability to exercise good judgment in emergency situations.

Ability to speak clearly and distinctly.

Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the general public.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, clients and the general public.

Must be familiar with routing software. Desirable Education and Experience Graduation from high school and moderate experience in transit dispatching, clerical and communication work; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Requirements Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license upon hire. Must be able to work a flexible schedule and be available Monday through Friday 6:00AM to 6:00PM.
