Church Facilities Manager

Job Description

PART‑TIME
FACILITIES MANAGER - FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF WILLOUGHBY
First Presbyterian Church of Willoughby is seeking a Part‑Time Facilities Manager to help care for and support our 60‑year‑old church building. We are seeking a dependable individual with solid building maintenance background who can perform basic mechanical, electrical, and plumbing repairs; oversee routine facility needs; and respond to occasional on-call situations when unexpected issues arise. This position is approximately 10-12 hours per week, primarily during daytime hours, with some flexibility in scheduling. Periodic on‑call availability may be required for emergency needs. Pay will depend on background and experience.
POSITION SUMMARY
This position will be responsible for the ongoing care, repair, and preventive maintenance of the church building and grounds. This role supports a 60‑year‑old facility with aging HVAC systems, plumbing, roof, drainage concerns, and general wear typical of an older structure. The technician evaluates maintenance issues to determine whether repairs can be handled directly or require outside assistance with the approval of head of staff and/or the Building and Grounds Head. Working from an existing facilities survey, Safety Policy Handbook, and daily maintenance needs, this position addresses known issues and conducts regular monitoring to identify concerns such as non‑functioning safety equipment, insulation gaps, moisture intrusion, sweating pipes, and equipment nearing end‑of‑life.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform general repairs including basic plumbing, carpentry, electrical, and mechanical tasks. Under the direction of Building and Grounds, assist in maintaining an updated list of preferred contractors for major repairs and service calls. Address common issues in older buildings, including frozen pipes, minor roof leaks, clogged drains, sticking doors, damaged drywall, worn flooring, etc. Replace fixtures, switches, outlets, valves, filters, and other small components as needed, using outside resources when necessary. Maintain and repair church furnishings, doors, windows, and hardware. Under the direction of Building and Grounds, ensure all required licenses, inspections, and permits are current and properly documented and available upon request. Keep Building & Grounds informed of all maintenance needs and repairs, and follow their guidance when outside contractors must be contacted.
QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated experience in general maintenance, facilities work or building trades. Working knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and HVAC maintenance. Ability to troubleshoot issues independently and recommend practical solutions. Ability to safely use ladders, hand tools, and power tools. Strong communication skills and a dependable, self‑directed work style. Ability to lift 40-50 lbs and perform physical tasks as required. Working knowledge of safety requirements—including Material Safety Data Sheets—and the ability to ensure all applicable government compliance standards are met.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
Experience maintaining older buildings or church facilities. Familiarity with freeze/thaw challenges, moisture control, and insulation best practices. Experience coordinating with licensed trades for major repairs.
