2292 W. 500 N., Hurricane, UT 84737 POSITION SUMMARY The Material Handler is a forklift-focused role responsible for receiving, storing, staging, and releasing steel and fabricated products in support of S&S Steel Fabrication's shop and yard operations. This position spends the majority of its time operating a forklift and, where qualified, overhead cranes — unloading incoming steel, moving materials between the yard, inventory, and shop, and loading outgoing shipments. The Material Handler also inspects incoming and outgoing materials, verifies documentation for accuracy, and maintains an organized, safe yard and stockyard.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
FORKLIFT & MATERIAL HANDLING
Safely and efficiently operate a forklift as the primary daily function of this role, including pre-shift inspections, load capacity checks, and safe travel through yard, dock, and shop areas. Load and unload delivery trucks using a forklift, positioning and securing steel and fabricated materials to prevent damage or shifting in transit. Move raw and finished materials between the yard, inventory racks, and the shop floor to support production schedules. Operate overhead cranes to move, stage, and position heavy or oversized steel materials when forklift use is not practical. Perform routine forklift and crane inspections; report mechanical issues, damage, or unsafe conditions immediately. Stage and organize materials in the yard for efficient retrieval, maintaining clear travel lanes and safe stacking practices. Match company purchase orders to vendor invoices and materials received. Check incoming material against ASTM A6 requirements upon receipt. Match materials to be shipped against bills of lading and inspect for proper marking prior to loading. Ensure shipping tickets are correct, accurate, and properly signed before trucks leave the yard. Maintain yard and stock inventory, including cycle counts and proper labeling/tagging of material. Use lifting chains, slings, and rigging hardware safely and correctly when moving material by crane. Follow all S&S Steel Fabrication safety policies and site-specific forklift and crane safety procedures at all times.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
Current forklift certification required; must pass S&S Steel Fabrication forklift qualification/re-certification. Demonstrated safe forklift operation in a steel, industrial, or warehouse yard environment. Overhead crane and rigging experience preferred. Ability to lift up to 100 pounds and perform physical yard/shop work in varying weather conditions. Strong attention to detail, particularly when verifying materials against POs, invoices, and bills of lading. Ability to read shipping/receiving documents and basic material markings. Dependable, safety-first mindset and ability to work as part of a shop team.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Three years of experience in material handling and rigging, including: Operation of forklifts and overhead cranes Proper use and maintenance of lifting chains and rigging hardware Shipping and receiving documentation Shipping regulations Technical training at a college or apprenticeship program may be substituted for experience, at a rate of one year of school per one year of experience.
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
Minimum of two hours of job-related training annually, in addition to initial forklift certification/re-certification. Training topics will reinforce the forklift, crane, rigging, and material handling qualifications and skills listed above. Training will reflect current material handling methods and may be delivered by equipment suppliers or manufacturers.
Pay:
$18.00 - $25.00 per hour Expected hours: 40.0 per week
