Board of Directors About Us Are you ready to lead an organization with a wild purpose? The Thompson Park Conservancy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit responsible for running Zoo New York . As the only zoo dedicated entirely to New York State's native wildlife, our mission is to spark conservation through science-based natural and cultural experiences. We serve as a vibrant hub for education, tourism, and family recreation in the Northern New York community. We are looking for a visionary, business-minded leader to step into the role of Executive Director and become the primary architect of our future success. The Role:
What You'll Do As our Executive Director, you will wear many hats—from strategic mastermind to community champion. You will secure the vital resources that drive our mission forward while keeping our operations running smoothly and efficiently. Your core focus areas will include:
Strategic & Financial Architecture:
Develop long-term plans for financial health, explore new revenue streams (like corporate partnerships and earned income), and drive a data-driven culture of business efficiency.
Fundraising & Advocacy Leadership:
Spearhead capital campaigns, major gifts, and annual appeals. You will write and manage grants while cultivating strong relationships with municipal partners (like the City of Watertown and Jefferson County).
Community Engagement:
Act as the proud "face" and voice of the Conservancy to the media, government officials, and the public, expanding our reach across the gorgeous Thousand Islands region.
Team & Board Collaboration:
Provide executive oversight of administration, visitor services, and facilities. Provide oversight and support of the Animal Curator, who handles zoological care and welfare. You will also partner closely with our Board of Directors. What You Bring to the Habitat We are looking for a proven leader who balances business acumen with diplomacy and heart.
Required Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Nonprofit Management, Public Administration, or a related field (Master's preferred) OR if you have an equivalent combination of formal education and professional experience, we strongly encourage you to apply. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered and evaluated by the Board of Directors.
Experience:
5-7 years of senior leadership experience in either the nonprofit or for-profit sector.
Financial Savvy:
A proven track record in budgeting, P&L oversight, and ideally, transforming or stabilizing organizational finances.
Fundraising Power:
Demonstrated success securing major gifts, grants, and sponsorships.
Bonus Points If You Have:
Prior experience as an Executive Director or senior manager at a zoo, cultural institution, or tourism/destination management organization. Familiarity with municipal government processes and grant writing.

Salary:
Commensurate with experience with an expected range of $75,000 - $90,000. Ready to Apply?
