Full Job Description Director of Laboratory Operations Location:
San Francisco, CA Company:
Superfluid Dx, Inc.
Salary:
$190,000 - $250,000 This is a full time, in office, position About Us Superfluid is developing the first high-performance, predictive blood-based test for Alzheimer's Disease (AD), related dementias, and cognitive decline that directly assays mRNA transcripts from the brain through its platform technology of cell-free messenger RNA (cf-mRNA) analysis. This next-generation liquid biopsy technology enables non-invasive measurement of dynamic biology throughout the body, including the brain. Our precise understanding of the underlying pathways of disease has the potential to transform AD disease care and treatment. Superfluid has a small but mighty team including Founder Steve Quake (Stanford Professor and Head of Science at CZI) and CEO Gajus Worthington (Former Founder/CEO of Fluidigm). Superfluid has published extensively in multiple peer-reviewed journals and is well funded by notable investors including Brook Byers and Reid Hoffman and is also supported by the NIH and Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation. About the Role Superfluid Dx is seeking an experienced Director, Laboratory Operations to lead our laboratory operations to support our transition toward clinical testing. This is a highly hands-on leadership role for an experienced diagnostics laboratory professional. The primary focus of this role is laboratory operations, quality, troubleshooting, process improvement, and preparation for a future CLIA-regulated laboratory, rather than primary assay development. The ideal candidate has significant experience in a diagnostic or clinical laboratory environment and understands what it takes to build and operate a high-quality, regulated laboratory. Responsibilities Own day-to-day laboratory operations and serve as the senior technical leader for the laboratory. Lead and mentor laboratory scientists and technical staff. Establish laboratory workflows, SOPs, QC processes, documentation, and training programs. Oversee assay implementation, verification/validation, troubleshooting, and ongoing performance. Develop the laboratory infrastructure, processes, and quality systems needed for future CLIA operations. Support the company's transition to a CLIA-regulated laboratory, including preparation for applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements. Help define laboratory space, equipment, instrumentation, staffing, and operational requirements. Manage laboratory vendors, equipment, inventory, and external laboratory relationships. Identify opportunities to improve laboratory efficiency, reliability, and throughput. Serve as a senior scientific resource for troubleshooting and technical decision-making. Partner closely with company leadership on clinical, quality, product, and operational priorities. Build and scale the laboratory organization as the company grows. As the company establishes its CLIA laboratory, assume the appropriate laboratory leadership responsibilities and, subject to applicable qualifications and regulatory requirements, serve as Laboratory Director. Qualifications Advanced degree in biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, clinical laboratory science, or a related field preferred. 8+ years of relevant laboratory experience, with substantial experience in diagnostics or clinical laboratory operations. Experience operating within a CLIA-regulated diagnostic laboratory. Strong understanding of CLIA requirements and laboratory quality systems. Experience with assay verification/validation, QC, troubleshooting, SOP development, and laboratory documentation. Demonstrated experience managing and mentoring laboratory personnel. Strong scientific judgment and hands-on laboratory skills. Experience building or scaling laboratory operations. Experience in a startup or small diagnostic company is a plus. What We're Looking For We are looking for an experienced laboratory leader who can own the lab. The right person will bring the scientific depth of a senior scientist, the operational skills of a laboratory leader, and practical experience working in a regulated diagnostic environment. This is a hands-on role in a small company. We are looking for someone who is comfortable moving between strategic planning, regulatory and quality considerations, troubleshooting an experiment, managing vendors, and working directly with the laboratory team.
