DESCRIPTION

Special Olympics Idaho is seeking a Young Athletes Coordinator to lead the growth and delivery of our Young Athletes programming across the state. Young Athletes introduces children with and without intellectual disabilities to the joy of movement, play, sports, and friendship. Through developmentally appropriate activities, children build foundational motor, social, and communication skills while families connect with a welcoming community and discover opportunities for continued participation in Special Olympics Idaho. The Young Athletes Coordinator will be responsible for developing and implementing programs, building relationships with families and community partners, recruiting and supporting volunteers, and expanding opportunities for young children throughout Idaho. A key priority of this position is to introduce children and families to Special Olympics Idaho at an early age and create a pathway for lifelong participation in sports, health, leadership, and inclusive community activities. The ideal candidate is organized, energetic, relationship-oriented, and passionate about creating meaningful opportunities for children of all abilities.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Development and Implementation Plan, coordinate, and deliver Young Athletes activities, including introductory sports, movement, and play-based programming. Lead the continued development of Special Olympics Idaho's Learn 2 and Learn to Play programs, including activities such as bocce, T-ball, biking, soccer, and other age-appropriate sports. Develop consistent programming that allows children to participate regularly and build skills over time. Ensure activities are inclusive, engaging, developmentally appropriate, and adaptable to the individual needs and abilities of each child. Coordinate program schedules, locations, equipment, registration, volunteers, and event logistics. Work with regional staff and local programs to expand Young Athletes opportunities throughout Idaho. Family Engagement and Athlete Development Serve as a primary point of contact for families participating in Young Athletes programming. Create a welcoming environment where families feel connected, supported, and informed about available opportunities. Develop relationships with parents and caregivers to better understand their children's interests, abilities, and needs. Help families navigate the transition from Young Athletes into other Special Olympics Idaho programs as their children grow. Maintain ongoing communication with families regarding activities, program updates, and future opportunities. Identify and address barriers that may prevent children and families from participating. Community Partnerships and Program Expansion Build relationships with schools, early childhood education programs, childcare providers, healthcare professionals, community organizations, and other potential referral partners. Develop outreach strategies to introduce Young Athletes to families who may not yet be familiar with Special Olympics Idaho. Collaborate with community recreation programs, sports organizations, and local businesses to increase access to inclusive activities. Identify underserved communities and develop opportunities to expand programming into additional areas of Idaho. Work with Special Olympics Idaho staff to establish sustainable local programs supported by community partners and volunteers. Volunteer Recruitment and Support Recruit, train, and support volunteers to assist with Young Athletes activities. Work with the Volunteer Services team to ensure volunteers complete required registration, screening, and training. Provide volunteers with activity plans, equipment guidance, and resources to deliver consistent, high-quality programming. Build relationships with schools, colleges, community groups, and other organizations to develop a reliable volunteer base. Support the development of local volunteer leaders who can help sustain and expand Young Athletes programming. Program Administration and Evaluation Maintain accurate participant registration, attendance, volunteer, and program records. Track program participation, family engagement, geographic reach, and growth. Develop and maintain program calendars, activity plans, and equipment inventories. Collect feedback from families, volunteers, and community partners to evaluate program effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement. Prepare regular program updates and reports for Special Olympics Idaho leadership. Assist with program budgeting, expense tracking, grant reporting, and identifying resources needed for expansion. Ensure all activities follow Special Olympics Idaho policies, safety standards, and applicable Special Olympics program guidelines. Collaboration and Organizational Support Work closely with the Sports & Operations, Unified Champion Schools, Health, Volunteer Services, and Development teams to connect families with additional opportunities. Support organizational events and activities as needed. Represent Special Olympics Idaho at community events, meetings, and outreach opportunities. Help promote the mission of Special Olympics Idaho and advocate for inclusive opportunities for children with intellectual disabilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Experience working with young children, individuals with intellectual disabilities, or inclusive recreation and sports programs. Strong organizational skills and the ability to coordinate multiple activities, schedules, and community relationships. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively with children, families, volunteers, and community partners. Ability to work independently, take initiative, and develop programs in new communities. Commitment to inclusion and creating a positive, welcoming experience for children of all abilities. Proficiency with common office software and the ability to maintain accurate program records. Valid driver's license and ability to travel throughout Idaho. Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends to support programs and events. Ability to meet Special Olympics Idaho's applicable volunteer and participant safety requirements.
