NEW Solutions connects experienced workers (ages 55+) with the National Park Service (NPS). These experienced professionals provide administrative expertise, facilities management, natural and cultural resource planning, and a broad array of other professional skills that support the National Park Service through the Experienced Services Program (ESP).
Positions listed here do not guarantee employment for any definite period. Enrollment in the Experienced Worker Programs administered by NEW Solutions is temporary. The enrollment relationship between NEW Solutions and the Enrollee is an "at-will" relationship. This means that an Enrollee is free to terminate enrollment at any time during the enrollment period, and NEW Solutions and the Agency have the right to terminate the relationship with the Enrollee.

Duration
This position is funded for up to 700 total hours.
Duties:
Enrollee is responsible for performing maintenance duties at Andrew Johnson National Cemetery and leading park interns and volunteers in the upkeep and care of the landscape.
Mentor and train young adult interns and volunteers. Lead crew in landscape rehabilitation projects and provide career guidance. 25%
Mow and trim the grass surrounding cemetery and assist with interns and volunteers in other areas of the park as needed. Trim hedges. Clear the property of leaves, limbs, brush, trash, and other debris. 30%
Maintain the walking trails. Maintain the ground, signs; paint and make repairs when necessary. Perform other routine grounds maintenance as determined by appointed park staff. 30%
Ensure safety of self, interns, and volunteers by ensuring proper PPE is being used, tools and equipment are being utilized properly, and by providing safety information/safety briefs on a regular basis. Inspect mowers, trimmers, blowers, etc. for proper function, fluids, and safety. 15%
Qualifications:
Minimum of 5 year(s) of experience in grounds maintenance
OR HS/GED
Degree
Enrollee should be able to work well independently and with park staff, volunteers, and visitors.

Health and Safety Considerations:
The enrollee will be required to take Park Orientation, Park Safety Training, and pertinent equipment and machinery training.
Required Safety Gear:
Hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, sturdy boots, etc. as required for the particular task.
Physical requirements: This work will take place outdoors in all types of weather. The enrollee should be able to lift heavy objects; be able to stoop, bend, and crouch; be able to operate machinery such as mowers, trimmers, and blowers; and be able to tolerate heat, humidity, cold, and inclement weather.
